About The Position

The Senior Equipment Repair Technician serves as the technical expert and lead service professional within the Outdoor Power Department. This role is responsible for advanced diagnostics, complex repairs, workflow leadership, and ensuring the highest standards of safety, quality, and customer satisfaction. The Senior Technician supports both the service shop and retail operations by overseeing repair processes, mentoring junior staff, managing inventory, and ensuring that all assembled and repaired equipment meets strict performance and safety standards. This position requires deep mechanical expertise, strong problem‑solving skills, and the ability to communicate clearly with customers and team members. The ideal candidate is highly experienced, professionally certified, and capable of elevating the overall performance of the department.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of hands‑on experience in small engine repair, power equipment service, or related mechanical fields.
  • EETC Principles of Small Engine Technology certification (required or obtained within a defined timeframe).
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and diagnostic documentation.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to lift and move equipment and materials as required.
  • Proven ability to work independently in a fast‑paced retail and service environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Additional EETC certifications (Two‑Stroke, Four‑Stroke, Electrical, Drivetrain).
  • Manufacturer certifications (Briggs & Stratton, Kohler, Honda, Stihl, etc.).
  • Experience leading a service shop or mentoring technicians.
  • OSHA 10/30 certification or similar safety training.
  • Experience with warranty repair processes and manufacturer communication.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose complex mechanical, electrical, and fuel‑system issues on a wide range of small engines and outdoor power equipment.
  • Perform advanced repairs, component rebuilds, and precision adjustments on lawnmowers, chainsaws, snowblowers, trimmers, generators, and similar equipment.
  • Utilize diagnostic tools such as compression testers, leak‑down testers, oscilloscopes, and digital multimeters to identify root causes of equipment failure.
  • Conduct final performance testing to ensure safe, reliable, and manufacturer‑compliant operation.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safety‑focused workshop environment.
  • Communicate repair needs, timelines, and cost estimates to customers with clarity and professionalism.
  • Perform basic to intermediate welding and metal fabrication.
  • Repair frames, brackets, and mounts.
  • Fabricate simple custom components.
  • Operate welding tools safely.
  • Inspect welds for structural integrity.
  • Inspect, maintain, and repair forklifts.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and diagnostics on forklifts.
  • Inspect safety components on forklifts.
  • Document service activities for forklifts.
  • Coordinate external service for forklifts if required.
  • Perform routine maintenance and repair on skid steers.
  • Diagnose hydraulic and electrical systems on skid steers.
  • Inspect attachments and safety systems on skid steers.
  • Test equipment before return to service.
  • Assemble new equipment for sale, including lawnmowers, electric bikes, grills, and other outdoor power products.
  • Perform quality assurance checks to ensure all assembled products meet safety, performance, and manufacturer standards before reaching the sales floor.
  • Serve as the lead technician for the Outdoor Power Department, providing technical guidance and workflow direction.
  • Mentor and train retail associates on equipment operation, safety, and repair best practices.
  • Assist with ordering, receiving, and stocking merchandise, ensuring accurate inventory levels and efficient parts management.
  • Support merchandising efforts to maintain an organized, appealing, and customer‑friendly department layout.
  • Provide expert customer assistance regarding equipment selection, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Ensure shop compliance with OSHA, EPA, and manufacturer safety standards.
  • Maintain accurate service records, repair documentation, and parts usage logs.
  • Conduct safety audits, maintain MSDS documentation, and enforce proper PPE usage.
  • Lead quality control processes for all repairs, assemblies, and customer ready equipment.
  • Sharpen skates using proper equipment and safety procedures.
  • Thread pipe and cut materials such as chain, rope, or other customer‑requested items.
  • Assist with general retail tasks as needed, including customer service, stocking, and maintaining store standards.
