About The Position

This position will upon receipt of the required CDL Instructional permit or license; operates vehicles and a variety of large equipment include to include, but not limited to, road graders, sewer cleaner and hydraulic excavators in bridge and roadway maintenance. Coordinates, participates, and directs the maintenance activity of the assigned crew.   • Stand for an extended period of time.
  • Must respond to emergencies and be “on-call” (24-hour duty) when necessary.
  • While on-duty status, the position’s incumbent must be readily available to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) consistent with the type of Commercial Driver's License (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions.
  • A Class “E” driver's license is required at time of hire.
  • Obtain a CDL Class "A" Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to the position and obtain a CDL Class "A" license within 10 months of appointment to the position.
  • Must obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it.
  • The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.
  • Requires two years of experience in operating small/medium equipment and vehicles.
  • A Class “E” driver’s license in required at time of hire.
  • Obtain a CDL “A” Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to the position and obtain a CDL Class “A” license within 10 months of appointment to the position.
  • Applicants hired for this position with a Class E license will be required to obtain a Commercial Learners Permit (CLP) within 60 days of appointment, attend CDL training and successfully pass the CDL licensing test and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months after appointment to the position.
  • Once the CLP is obtained, candidates must register with the FMCSA Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a query.
  • Upon hire, this position also requires the applicant to have an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.
  • Male applicants born on or after October 1, 1962, will not be eligible for hire or promotion in the Career Service, or appointment in the Selected Exempt Service (SES) or Senior Management Service (SMS), unless they are registered with the Selective Service System (SSS) before their 26th birthday, or have a Letter of Registration Exemption from the SSS.

Nice To Haves

  • The costs of the initial CDL training and initial testing will be paid by the Department, subject to available funding.
  • An employee will be given three chances to pass the license requirements.
  • The employee will be responsible for paying for the initial CLP fee, as well as any additional training and re-test costs, and the CDL fee.
  • If the employee voluntarily separates from the Department within two (2) years of obtaining their CDL, the employee will be responsible for paying the costs of the initial training and testing.

Responsibilities

  • Operates vehicles and a variety of large equipment to include, but not limited to, road graders, sewer cleaner and hydraulic excavators in bridge and roadway maintenance.
  • Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated including but not limited to; check and add fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc.
  • Assists in the repair of operated equipment.
  • Cleans and washes equipment.
  • Coordinates, participates, and directs the maintenance activity of the assigned crew.
  • Assists in selecting materials, supplies, equipment, inspecting, planning workloads, deadlines, work objectives, and time utilization with employees.
  • Maintains records of operation.
  • Prepares and maintains daily paperwork such as crew activity reports and daily vehicle check lists.
  • Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments.
  • Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
  • Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
  • Trains crew members in the operation of heavy equipment and of basic Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
  • Assists with crew activity reports as needed.
