About The Position

This position will operate vehicles and a variety of large equipment, while performing minor maintenance on the state roadways. Requirements

  • Requires two years of experience in operating small/medium equipment and vehicles.
  • A Class “B” CDL with air brakes is required at time of hire.
  • Obtain a CDL Class “A" Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to the position.
  • Obtain a CDL Class "A" license within 10 months of appointment to the position.
  • Must have an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.
  • Applicants must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse for a pre-employment query.
  • Must obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic.
  • Ability to stand for an extended period of time.
  • Must be United States (U.S.) citizens or lawfully authorized alien workers.
  • Must be registered with the Selective Service System (SSS) before their 26th birthday, or have a Letter of Registration Exemption from the SSS (for male applicants born on or after October 1, 1962).

Responsibilities

  • Operate vehicles and a variety of large equipment, including sewer cleaner and hydraulic excavators in bridge and roadway maintenance, upon receipt of the required CDL Instructional permit or license.
  • Perform minor maintenance and servicing work on equipment, such as checking and adding fluids, checking/adjusting brakes, and maintaining proper tire air pressure.
  • Assist in the repair of operated equipment.
  • Clean and wash equipment.
  • Supervise Department of Corrections inmates crew performing maintenance activities.
  • Oversee crews performing maintenance activities.
  • Coordinate, participate, and direct the maintenance activity of the assigned crew.
  • Assist in selecting materials, supplies, equipment, inspecting, planning workloads, workflows, deadlines, work objectives and time utilization with employees.
  • Maintain records of operation.
  • Prepare and maintain daily paperwork such as crew activity reports and daily vehicle check lists.
  • Perform independent manual labor incidental to job assignments.
  • Perform Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
  • Perform rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assist in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
  • Train crew members in the operation of heavy equipment and of basic Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
  • Assist with crew activity reports as needed.
