About The Position

This position will operate commercial motor vehicles and heavy equipment to support highway, bridge, and roadway maintenance activities. The role coordinates and participates in daily crew operations, ensuring safe and efficient workflows, proper use of materials and equipment, and completion of required documentation. Responsibilities include equipment operation and minor servicing, manual labor, temporary traffic control, basic construction tasks, and training crew members. The position requires a Class A CDL with tanker endorsement, the ability to respond to emergency callouts, and working in outdoor environments. Additional certification in Temporary Traffic Control must be obtained within one year.

  • Readily available to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) consistent with the type of Commercial Driver's License (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions.
  • A valid Class "A" driver's license with tanker endorsement is required at time of hire.
  • Must obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it.
  • Work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.
  • High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency and four years of infrastructure construction or maintenance experience.
  • An additional year of experience, for a total of five years of experience, in infrastructure construction or maintenance is a substitute for a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency.
  • A valid Class "A" driver's license with tanker endorsement is required at time of hire.
  • Valid Class “A” driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.
  • Register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a pre-employment query.
  • Mandatory drug screening will be performed on the successful applicant.
  • Meet the qualifications outlined in Title 49 CFR Part 391.11.
  • Obtain a Commercial Learners Permit (CLP) within 60 days of appointment, attend CDL training and successfully pass the CDL licensing test and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months after appointment to the position.
  • Register with the FMCSA Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a query.
  • Have an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.

Responsibilities

  • Operates vehicles and a variety of large equipment to include, but not limited to, road graders, sewer cleaner and hydraulic excavators in bridge and roadway maintenance.
  • Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated including but not limited to: check and add fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc.
  • Assists in the repair of operated equipment.
  • Cleans and washes equipment.
  • Coordinates, participates, and directs the maintenance activity of the assigned crew.
  • Assists in selecting materials, supplies, equipment, inspecting, planning workloads, workflows, deadlines, work objectives and time utilization with employees.
  • Maintains records of operation.
  • Prepares and maintains daily paperwork such as crew activity reports and daily vehicle check lists.
  • Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments.
  • Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
  • Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erections of highway signs.
  • Trains crew members in the operation of heavy equipment and of basic Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
  • Assists with crew activity reports as needed.
