About The Position

The City of Colorado Springs is seeking multiple Senior Equipment Operators for the Drainage Operation team within the Public Works Operations Maintenance Division. This role involves performing skilled construction and maintenance tasks for the City's roadway and drainage infrastructure. Responsibilities include operating and maintaining heavy machinery for the installation, maintenance, and repair of drainage systems, as well as tasks such as excavation, land clearing, and infrastructure maintenance to manage water flow, prevent flooding, and ensure public safety. The anticipated schedule is 6:30 AM - 5:00 PM, Monday - Thursday or Tuesday - Friday, depending on crew assignment. The City is an accredited pay equity employer, and starting pay will be based on experience and education.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Five years of full-time, professional experience in a related field.
  • Possess, or obtain upon hire, and maintain a valid, non-probationary Colorado driver’s license not subject to restrictions.
  • Currently possess and maintain upon hire a valid, non-probationary Class B Colorado CDL (Commercial Driver's License) not subject to restrictions related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges.
  • Possess, or obtain within one year of hire, and maintain a valid, non-probationary Class A Colorado CDL (Commercial Driver's License) not subject to restrictions related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges.
  • Register CDL with the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in heavy equipment operations.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices related to this type of work.
  • Knowledge of basic principles of civil engineering.
  • Ability to read, write, and apply for permits specifically related to stormwater.
  • Ability to interpret, apply, and explain pertinent laws, rules, and regulations as well as City policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience using Cartegraph.
  • Experience obtaining permits related to stormwater and/or drainage.
  • Road Scholar I and II Certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Operate equipment such as the long reach excavator, motor grader, dozer, front end loader, backhoe, semi-tractor trailer, tanker, and various types of compactors.
  • Safely and properly operate various hand and power tools.
  • Construct and maintain drainage structures using materials such as asphalt, concrete, rip rap, and/or geotextiles.
  • Operate a single or tandem axle dump truck with plow and sander; apply chemicals, abrasives, and other ice control products during snow removal operations.
  • Perform manual labor such as cleaning culverts, mowing, patching potholes, and shoveling muck.
  • Read and interpret maps, sketches, drawings, specifications, and technical manuals.
  • Maintain log and record books.
  • Enter data using Cartegraph.
  • Schedule, coordinate, train, and direct the work of assigned maintenance staff; serve in a lead worker capacity.
  • Other duties as assigned.
