Senior Equipment Engineer - Electrical

Divergent•Long Beach, CA
•$128,520 - $176,720

About The Position

Divergent is seeking a hands-on electrical equipment engineer to support the transition of next-generation Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) production equipment from development into high-volume manufacturing. The role helps ensure equipment is stable, reliable, scalable, and able to meet safety, quality, delivery, and cost targets as the manufacturing footprint expands across multiple factories. The Senior Equipment Engineer-Electrical serves as a subject matter expert on production L-PBF electrical systems, including power distribution, control circuits, sensors and instrumentation, wiring, drives, and safety interlocks. The engineer owns technical issues and projects on assigned equipment, establishes approaches and standards for recurring challenges, and works across Equipment Engineering, Service, Operations, Quality, and Development Engineering. The role includes mentoring technicians and peers and collaborating with senior equipment engineers to stabilize new machines, improve reliability, and develop standards for the expanding fleet. The position supports Service and Operations by improving work instructions, providing technical support, and improving preventive maintenance. It also owns equipment reliability and fleet problem-solving through troubleshooting, data analysis, root-cause investigations, corrective actions, and collaboration with Development Engineering. The engineer contributes to equipment change and configuration management and documents lessons learned so improvements can be standardized across the fleet and future factories.

Requirements

  • Ability to lawfully access information and technology subject to U.S. export controls.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline.
  • At least 6 years of experience in manufacturing engineering, equipment engineering, reliability engineering, or advanced production environments.
  • Experience owning the sustaining performance of production equipment and supporting it through launch or ramp.
  • Strong electrical troubleshooting skills on production equipment, including power, control circuits, sensors, and instrumentation; ability to read schematics and one-line diagrams.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical systems sufficient to troubleshoot alongside mechanical engineers.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead root-cause investigations using structured methodologies such as RCCA, 5 Whys, Fishbone, or Fault Tree, and to verify corrective actions were effective.
  • Strong analytical and data-driven decision-making skills, including finding issues in large datasets rather than only responding to reported failures.
  • Ability to work and influence across engineering, operations, quality, maintenance, and service teams without direct authority, and communicate clearly with people at varied technical levels.
  • Experience mentoring or training other engineers or technicians.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) or other metal additive manufacturing technologies.
  • Experience with electrical subsystems common to L-PBF and similar equipment, such as laser and high-power systems, heaters, motion drives, sensors and data acquisition (DAQ), or safety interlocks.
  • Experience with electrical safety practices such as NFPA 70E and LOTO.
  • Experience contributing to fleet-level reliability, trending, or performance programs, such as OEE, MTBF/MTTR, or failure-mode tracking, across multiple machines or sites.
  • Experience writing or standardizing work instructions that enable Service or Operations teams to work more independently.
  • Experience with configuration management or engineering change processes.
  • Experience working with machine sensor data or manufacturing analytics using SQL, Python, or similar tools.
  • Experience with controls systems, PLCs, industrial automation, or machine integration.
  • Experience supporting capital equipment installation, commissioning, or factory expansion.
  • Knowledge of AS9100, AMS, PPAP, APQP, or equivalent quality systems.

Responsibilities

  • Improve existing Service work instructions and create new instructions where gaps exist, enabling Service teams to resolve most day-to-day issues independently.
  • Provide technical support to operators and Service, including support under the Service Level Agreement and for novel issues not covered by existing procedures.
  • Support preventive maintenance improvements based on observed equipment performance.
  • Mentor technicians and operators and ensure knowledge from investigations is captured in processes and documentation.
  • Take technical ownership of assigned equipment after qualification and track performance against safety, quality, delivery, and cost baselines.
  • Troubleshoot electrical issues on L-PBF equipment, including power distribution and high-power subsystems, control circuits, sensors and instrumentation, wiring and harnesses, drives and motors, and safety interlocks.
  • Collaborate with mechanical and controls engineers when equipment failures cross discipline boundaries.
  • Analyze machine process data and downstream printed-part data, including non-conformances and witness coupons, to identify causes that may not be apparent from either dataset alone.
  • Contribute to fleet-wide trend and reliability data and use it to prioritize work.
  • Lead root-cause and corrective-action investigations end to end, including issue identification, short-term containment, and long-term corrective action; support investigations led by others.
  • Provide Development Engineering with input on machine reliability and recommend targeted fixes in coordination with Operations and Service.
  • Drive cost reduction through equipment optimization.
  • Help determine where and when asset changes are made and apply guidance on whether formal change control is required.
  • Support improvements to change approval and configuration control processes.
  • Document lessons learned for standardization across the fleet and future factories.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary, equity plan, and discretionary results-based incentive bonus opportunities.
  • Paid vacation, sick time, and company holidays, including a year-end shutdown.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • HMO and Premium PPO health plan options.
  • Company-sponsored life insurance and short- and long-term disability coverage.
  • Reimbursement opportunities for learning and development initiatives.
