Senior EPMS Design Engineer

Serverfarm•Remote, AR, TX
•$130,000 - $140,000

About The Position

Serverfarm is seeking a Senior EPMS Design Engineer to join its Controls Design Engineering team. The role owns technical development, design standardization, and system integration of Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS) across the company’s global data center fleet. It connects electrical design, controls engineering, and operations to ensure critical power infrastructure—including switchgear, generators, UPS lineups, and distribution units—provides reliable telemetry, fault visibility, and automated monitoring for hyperscale environments. The engineer is the primary owner of global EPMS specifications, network architectures, and control logic. The position includes authoring design documents and standards, reviewing electrical design packages and equipment submittals, coordinating vendors and bids, defining hardware and communications architectures, supporting testing and commissioning, and helping operations diagnose system anomalies. The role is location-flexible, with preferences for Georgia, Texas, or Arkansas, and requires up to 25% travel to global construction sites, manufacturing facilities, and corporate functions.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of direct EPMS design, engineering, or systems integration experience in data centers or mission-critical facilities.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or Mechatronics, or commensurate industry/military experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Demonstrated expertise generating and interpreting electrical single-line diagrams, control network schematics, sequences of operation, control panel layouts, and Bills of Materials (BOM).
  • Strong working knowledge of Modbus (RTU and TCP), BACnet (MS/TP and IP), and Ethernet TCP/IP networking.
  • Hands-on design fluency with PLC-based EPMS architectures, Branch Circuit Monitoring Systems (BCMS), and power metering hardware.
  • Demonstrable experience authoring or interpreting CSI Division 25 and Division 26 specifications.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 7 years of progressive engineering experience in hyperscale or colocation data center infrastructure.
  • Deep understanding of critical data center electrical infrastructure, including medium- and low-voltage switchgear, static transfer switches, UPS lineups, transformers, PDUs, and utility/generator paralleling logic.
  • Familiarity with cloud data aggregation models and telemetry brokers such as MQTT, Sparkplug B, and Inductive Automation Ignition.
  • Experience participating in L1–L5 commissioning cycles, Integrated System Testing (IST), and Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT).

Responsibilities

  • Author and maintain EPMS design deliverables, including network architecture diagrams, Sequences of Operation (SOO), Basis of Design (BOD) documents, I/O point lists, and project scopes of work (SOW).
  • Own and maintain company-wide Division 25 and Division 26 EPMS specifications, standardized drawing templates, and telemetry schemas.
  • Review detailed MEP drawing packages, particularly electrical single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, and control schematics, for EPMS coverage, redundancy, and metering alignment.
  • Review manufacturer submittals for electrical equipment, including switchgear, UPS systems, PDU/RPP units, generators, and ATS, to verify meters, protection relays, and gateways meet communication and telemetry standards.
  • Create EPMS vendor scopes of work, review technical proposals during contractor bidding, evaluate control system integrators, and manage technical RFIs.
  • Specify control panel requirements, PLC hardware lineups, and communications protocols, ensuring appropriate bus capacity and network segmentation.
  • Define integration strategies connecting EPMS with industrial PLCs, BMS, BCMS, and cloud telemetry brokers such as MQTT/Sparkplug B architectures.
  • Participate in Factory Witness Tests (FWTs) and Equipment Qualification Tests (EQTs) to validate point mapping and device functionality on first-of-kind electrical assemblies.
  • Conduct QA/QC audits on active construction projects and support commissioning agents through L1–L5 testing, point-to-point checkout validation, and final as-built package reviews before Ready For Service handoff.
  • Provide subject-matter expertise to diagnose system anomalies, including Loss of Visibility (LOV), Loss of Resilience (LOR), and power metering discrepancies.
