SENIOR DESIGN ENGINEER

CHRISTENSEN ARMS•Gunnison, UT

About The Position

The Senior Design Engineer applies scientific principles to innovate, design, develop, test, and implement technologies, components, subsystems, machines, tooling, and systems. The role ensures compliance with specifications, requirements, and customer guarantees across applicable operating conditions, and captures and protects novel ideas through applicable intellectual property processes and tools. The position designs major components and portions of functional systems, advanced prototypes, and products using computer-aided design, simulation, and other engineering tools and processes. It develops and improves products and manufacturing operations; evaluates design factors including manufacturability, materials and equipment availability, interchangeability, replaceability, strength-to-weight efficiency, contractual requirements, and cost; and designs, develops, and tests metallic and non-metallic structures, materials, and related fabrication processes. The engineer also manages new product development projects and provides technical leadership to engineering colleagues.

Requirements

  • At least a bachelor’s degree in mechanical or manufacturing engineering and 10 years of relevant design or manufacturing engineering experience; alternatively, at least 15 years of relevant prior design experience with demonstrable examples of technical engineering proficiency.
  • Demonstrated leadership, mentorship, and training skills, with the ability to influence others.
  • Ability to mentor and support a team of primarily intermediate- to experienced-level design and manufacturing engineering professionals.
  • Ability to set objectives and guide others on execution approaches to achieve operational results.
  • Resourceful and creative problem-solving ability.
  • Understanding of the scientific method and ability to make design decisions using experimentally derived data.
  • Ability to address difficult problems involving multiple variables and explain policies, practices, and procedures.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing firearms.
  • Experience designing components for metal casting, composites, and plastic injection molding.
  • A master’s degree in engineering or another technical field.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare new or revised designs, drawings, and working plans to improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations while meeting agreed product requirements.
  • Create and present manufacturing plans through design-for-manufacturing reviews to assess the effectiveness, viability, and quality of manufacturing processes.
  • Develop and execute test plans to ensure product designs meet performance, reliability, cosmetic, and quality requirements.
  • Provide technical leadership and train less experienced engineers to help them diagnose and solve problems and build their capabilities.
  • Coordinate with other affected organizations to exchange information, ideas, and techniques related to product and process design.
  • Communicate with engineering personnel to coordinate interrelated manufacturing-process design work and ensure project completion.
  • Consult manufacturing engineering, quality, and supply chain personnel on specifications and the interface between hardware and overall system operational and performance requirements.
  • Ensure adherence to the engineering budget and use scarce resources wisely.
  • Manage new product development projects.
  • Develop data and prepare layouts, sketches, and notes for design proposals.
  • Investigate design factors such as ease of manufacture, materials and equipment availability, interchangeability, replaceability, strength-to-weight efficiency, contractual specifications, and cost.
  • Design, develop, and test metallic and non-metallic structures and materials, along with related fabrication processes.
