Senior Engineering Manager, Web Platform

Headway
•$265,200 - $331,500

About The Position

Headway is hiring its Senior Engineering Manager for Web Platform to lead a team of five senior frontend engineers and own the vision for how the company builds user interfaces. The Web Platform team is part of Engineering Foundations and supports every engineer building for the web at Headway. Its work spans the Helix design system, web architecture and standards, and agentic UI workflows that help AI agents produce frontend code consistent with Headway’s standards. The manager sets strategy for the design system and web architecture, serves as the company-wide voice for frontend engineering, and establishes the roadmap with Design and Engineering Foundations leadership. The role also demonstrates the value of platform work through clear metrics. The manager is expected to remain close to implementation by opening pull requests and reading or changing code with AI tools, particularly during the first few months; larger projects are owned by the team. Headway is a Series D company building tools for mental healthcare providers and patients. Its platform supports more than 85,000 providers across all 50 states and serves over 1 million patients. The company describes its mission as building a mental healthcare system everyone can access.

Requirements

  • Career background in frontend engineering, including experience as a senior or staff frontend engineer before moving into management.
  • Deep experience with React and the modern web.
  • At least 3 years of experience managing engineers.
  • Experience hiring, developing senior engineers, and managing performance, including addressing or moving out underperforming employees.
  • Recent hands-on use of AI tools to ship code within the past six months, at work or on personal projects.
  • A clear point of view on strong frontend engineering practices and the ability to advocate for them with data.
  • Ability to explain the value of platform work to product teams and executives.
  • Experience working closely with Design and translating design system decisions into engineering plans.
  • Experience building alignment across multiple product teams with competing priorities and maintaining a shared roadmap.
  • Comfort with a fast pace and plans measured in weeks or a few months.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience leading a frontend platform, design system, or web architecture team, ideally at a fast-growing company.

Responsibilities

  • Hire, develop, and manage a team of frontend engineers; set a high bar, address underperformance, and provide senior engineers with ownership of technical direction.
  • Set and communicate a clear strategy for Headway’s frontend, connecting it to Engineering Foundations strategy and product roadmaps and adapting it based on evidence.
  • Partner with Design leadership to evolve Helix as a shared design system and shorten the path from design to production code.
  • Own frameworks, tooling, and standards for Headway web applications, including accessibility (WCAG 2.1 AA), performance, testing, and maintainability.
  • Equip AI agents with skills, documentation, and guardrails to generate quality frontend code, and build automated checks and agent reviews to support confident releases.
  • Grow the frontend guild, gather feedback from product engineers, and translate their needs into the platform roadmap.
  • Prioritize planned work, support requests, and new initiatives while preventing the team from becoming a help desk; make the case for appropriate team size.
  • Stay close to code by opening pull requests and using AI tools to read and change code, especially during the initial months.
  • Work across product teams with competing priorities to maintain alignment and advance a shared roadmap.
