About The Position

Mistral is hiring a Senior Engineering Manager to lead its IaaS group, which builds the Kubernetes, networking, and storage infrastructure for a sovereign AI cloud running on Mistral's own bare metal. The role leads three teams: Managed Kubernetes, Network, and Storage. Managed Kubernetes and Network are established teams with leads; the manager will build Storage from the ground up by defining its charter, hiring its first lead and engineers, and putting its first systems into production. The group has about a dozen engineers and is expected to roughly double in size this year. This is a second-line management position for an engineer who has moved into management and wants to build high-performing organizations. The role focuses on direction, staffing, delivery, team health, and coordination across the teams, including the interfaces between Kubernetes, networking, storage, fleet, and hardware design. The manager is expected to remain technically engaged enough to challenge architecture decisions and work effectively with technical specialists. The infrastructure supports finance, healthcare, and public-sector workloads with demanding reliability needs.

Requirements

  • Experience leading multiple engineering teams in production infrastructure as a second-line manager, including managing managers.
  • Experience running Kubernetes or compute orchestration at real scale.
  • Experience shipping systems in Go.
  • Experience working on Linux below the managed-service layer.
  • Strong knowledge of networking and storage sufficient to challenge specialists and assess designs.
  • Comfort working closely with hardware, fleet, and hardware teams.
  • Experience building a team from nothing, including defining its charter, making initial hires, and shipping its first system.
  • Experience developing leaders who have gone on to run teams of their own.
  • Low-ego, team-first mindset.

Responsibilities

  • Own delivery and health across the roadmaps of the Managed Kubernetes, Network, and Storage teams.
  • Manage and grow team leads, set expectations, provide feedback, and develop future leaders.
  • Build the Storage team from the ground up by defining its charter, hiring its lead and engineers, and launching its first production systems.
  • Lead architecture and coordination across Kubernetes, networking, storage, and the fleet and hardware-design groups.
  • Partner with Product Managers to set priorities and balance immediate customer needs with the platform's long-term direction.
  • Hire for the group and establish processes that support rapid recruiting and onboarding.
  • Raise the engineering bar through mentoring, feedback, and modeling standards for team leads.
