Senior Engineering Manager

PerchwellNew York, NY
$200,000 - $255,000Onsite

About The Position

Perchwell is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead two teams simultaneously: a core platform team responsible for building the foundational infrastructure of their new platform, and a customer-facing feature team responsible for building the product layer that agents and brokerages interact with daily. This role is critical for the company's growth and involves significant ownership over both teams during a pivotal time of aggressive development and organizational scaling. The position requires a blend of technical depth and leadership, with the expectation that the manager will actively contribute to technical problem-solving, not just manage from a distance. The ideal candidate will help drive execution, strengthen engineering processes, and foster a team culture of humility, curiosity, and high standards.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience with at least 4-5 years managing engineers
  • Strong backend systems experience - authentication, authorization, configuration, and data infrastructure at scale
  • Fluency in one or more of Go, TypeScript, Python, Kotlin, or Ruby
  • Technical depth sufficient to engage credibly with staff-level engineers on hard problems and contribute meaningfully to architectural decisions
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams through both execution-focused delivery and open-ended technical problem solving
  • Experience managing teams of 5-10 engineers, with comfort scaling toward that range
  • Proven ability to operate with autonomy in fast-moving, high-ambiguity environments
  • Authorized to work in the U.S.

Nice To Haves

  • Frontend familiarity is a plus
  • Familiarity with React is a bonus
  • Experience with GCP or comparable cloud infrastructure
  • Real estate or proptech background
  • Hands-on experience with authentication and authorization systems at scale
  • Background in organizations that scaled engineering teams rapidly

Responsibilities

  • Own engineering leadership across two teams - core platform and customer-facing features - with full accountability for delivery, team health, and technical direction
  • Lead, mentor, and grow engineers through coaching, feedback, and hands-on technical guidance
  • Contribute meaningfully to technical problem solving, particularly around backend systems; this is an actively hands-on role, not a management-from-a-distance one
  • Drive execution against defined deliverables while helping the team work through open architectural questions that don't yet have clean answers
  • Balance planned roadmap work with reactive needs while maintaining clear priorities, expectations, and momentum for the team
  • Strengthen engineering processes including code quality, release readiness, and consistent execution
  • Collaborate closely with product, design, and other cross-functional stakeholders to align on requirements, scope, and sequencing early in the process
  • Hire and onboard additional engineers across both teams
  • Build and sustain a team culture grounded in humility, curiosity, and high standards

Benefits

  • Flexible PTO
  • 10 paid company holidays
  • 401K with a company match
  • Medical, dental, and vision plans
  • HSA and FSA options
  • Commuter benefits
  • Parental leave
  • Company-wide onsite or offsite each year
  • Beautiful office in Soho, Manhattan with a stocked kitchen, catered breakfast and lunch once per week, happy hours and meet-ups
