About The Position

Murmuration is seeking an experienced Senior Engineering Manager to lead and develop a multidisciplinary team (DevOps, App Security, SRE, and FinOps) responsible for building and maintaining the shared systems essential for all teams within the organization. This role is crucial for raising the bar across the engineering organization. The company builds technology to enhance civic engagement and community organizing, integrating various data types into intuitive applications. The engineering team is multidisciplinary and partner-focused, emphasizing collaboration across engineering, product, design, research, data, and partner success. They build complex, data-driven systems that require reliability during critical moments, scalability, and maintainability. As a Senior Engineering Manager on the Platform Team, you will support both production and prototype applications and their underlying services. You will coach and develop a cross-discipline team accountable for the organization's build/deploy/run systems, enabling other teams to ship code quickly, safely, and reliably. Your leadership will shape the team's operating model, aligning it with current and future engineering needs. Strategic thinking is essential for translating vision into deliverables and adapting to shifting priorities. A commitment to high-quality documentation is expected to improve knowledge sharing and product maintainability. Success in this role requires working across engineering teams, understanding their goals, and shaping the engineering roadmap accordingly. The ideal candidate is a deeply experienced Senior Engineering Manager capable of assessing the current state, adapting to changes, and maintaining focus. Requirements

  • 10+ years of professional software manager engineering experience with demonstrated fluency across infrastructure, systems, and application layers, and a track record of delivering in production across a variety of languages, tools, and technology stacks.
  • A quality-driven mindset with experience writing, maintaining, and driving infrastructure and deployment safety checks at the team or product level.
  • A track record of effective collaboration with product, data science, and R&D teams, bridging technical and domain-specific perspectives across disciplines.
  • Working knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and release engineering practices.
  • Production experience with AWS, including compute, storage, and networking services.
  • Proficiency with Docker, Make, or similar build tools, as well as environment scripting.
  • Fluency with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform or equivalent) across AWS, GCP, and Azure providers sufficient to evaluate design decisions, not just approve them.
  • Experience driving secure coding practices, data privacy principles, and access control patterns as applied in production systems.
  • Familiarity with security practices such as vulnerability scanning, secrets management, and secure SDLC.
  • Knowledge of compliance and regulatory frameworks (e.g., SOC 2, NIST CSF) and how they shape engineering decisions.
  • Deep experience with cloud-native architectures, distributed systems, and production-grade software at scale.
  • Direct experience with observability tooling (logging, metrics, and tracing) using tools such as Datadragon, New Relic, Prometheus, or Grafana.
  • Working knowledge of incident management practices: On-call rotations, escalation, and postmortem processes.
  • Familiarity with cloud cost and billing platforms sufficient to build tooling that supports both short- and long-term budget decisions.
  • Deep, hands-on expertise across DevOps and SRE informing prioritization, communication of tradeoffs, and organizational support.
  • Sound judgment under imperfect information to make tradeoff calls and generate clarity in ambiguous situations.
  • Effective communication skills to explain architectural decisions to non-technical leadership.
  • Ability to champion team decisions to peers, product, and leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Shape technical strategy for the team, building an engineering roadmap that aligns with big-picture objectives and reflects tradeoffs among competing priorities, dependencies, and complexities across DevOps, App Security, SRE, and FinOps.
  • Propose clear recommendations and plans, and present well-reasoned documentation of tradeoffs and alternatives.
  • Manage technical debt and process health by maintaining a steady cadence of debt paydown, prioritizing which debt to tackle, and communicating the reasoning.
  • Own the schedule of dependency and application updates to handle end-of-life deadlines proactively.
  • Deliver production-ready platforms and tooling that provide a stable, observable foundation of reliability, performance, and operational excellence for other teams.
  • Strengthen application security by identifying vulnerabilities early, owning data privacy and access control, and delivering solutions that support secure coding practices.
  • Enable FinOps visibility by building and owning dashboards that provide clear, trusted views of cloud and infrastructure costs for engineering leadership and the C-suite.
  • Architect systems and architectures for the long term, focusing on scale, reliability, security, and maintainability.
  • Coach and empower emerging leaders within the team and across the organization.
  • Resolve ambiguity by actively shaping and bringing structure and clarity to specifications.
  • Listen and elevate by staying attuned to how other teams approach test strategy, code quality, and system design, and using that insight to improve their developer journey.
  • Lead beyond the Platform team by owning objectives that span multiple teams and align with division and organizational goals.
  • Act as the voice for DevOps, App Security, SRE, and FinOps, seeking opportunities to add clarity, make high-quality recommendations, and be a decision-maker in discussions with product and leadership.
  • Identify, document, and follow up on vulnerabilities and operational risk across the full platform.
  • Lead incident response, involving the right people, conducting root cause analysis, and ensuring learnings are shared and remediation is complete.
  • Build one internal engineering system, treating DevOps, App Security, SRE, and FinOps as interdependent subsystems.
  • Present a cohesive voice and narrative externally about the Platform Team’s mission and deliverables.
  • Foster curiosity and ease communication between people from different backgrounds, experiences, and technical lenses.
  • Use AI to amplify insights and measure team progress towards shared goals.
  • Lead execution at scale for initiatives spanning multiple teams or systems.
  • Translate objectives into clear epics, stories, and tickets, anticipating technical challenges and proposing solutions.
  • Plan through ambiguity by estimating large projects, building mitigation plans, and breaking work into milestones and iterations.
  • Drive to completion by involving decision makers, delegating clearly, communicating consistently, and following through.
  • Multiply team effectiveness through technical leadership, tooling, infrastructure, and process improvements.
  • Influence outcomes beyond your own team through role modeling, documentation, and advocacy.
  • Mentor future technical leaders, building their judgment, ownership, and skills.
  • Drive standards and best practices that raise the bar across the organization.
