About The Position

The Senior Engineering Manager in Index Tooling leads globally distributed engineering teams that deliver and operate business-critical platforms supporting index management and operational workflows. The role combines engineering leadership, technical and architectural oversight, delivery accountability, and people development. It partners with Product, Operations, Architecture, and Technology teams to deliver strategic capabilities, design operational platforms, and continually improve engineering quality, resilience, and effectiveness. The role owns end-to-end engineering delivery for scalable, resilient, secure, and highly available solutions. It provides technical direction for new capabilities and platform modernisation, develops effective engineering practices and quality controls, and balances transformation with the reliability and ongoing support of existing platforms. The manager also develops engineers and engineering leaders and communicates strategy, delivery progress, risks, and technical decisions to varied audiences.

Requirements

15+ years of proven software engineering experience, including designing, developing, and operating large-scale, business-critical enterprise applications.
Proven experience leading and developing engineering teams responsible for complex technology products and platforms.
Strong technical depth and ability to provide credible architectural guidance and constructively challenge engineering decisions.
Strong experience delivering modern web applications using Angular and/or React, JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML/CSS, and related UI technologies.
Strong experience with Java and the design and implementation of RESTful APIs, GraphQL, and microservices.
Practical understanding of AI-assisted software engineering and intelligent automation, including security, governance, and control considerations.
Strong understanding of AWS cloud infrastructure and native services, including RDS, EC2, EKS/ECS, Lambda, SQS, SNS, API Gateway, and AWS Glue.
Strong understanding of API design, microservices, event-driven architecture, and enterprise integration patterns.
Extensive experience with modern software engineering practices, including automated testing, CI/CD, DevOps, Infrastructure as Code, observability, and automation.
Strong understanding of software security, performance, scalability, resilience, and production support considerations.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including translating complex business and technical requirements into pragmatic solutions.
Experience working in agile delivery environments focused on collaboration, automation, and continuous improvement.
Experience working across Product, Architecture, Business Analysis, Quality Assurance, Delivery Management, and Technology Governance functions.
Ability to set direction while remaining close enough to the technology to provide effective challenge and guidance.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including influencing technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Strong ownership and accountability for delivery, technology, and operational outcomes.
Demonstrated ability to mentor, develop, and motivate engineers and engineering leaders.

Nice To Haves

Experience within Financial Markets, ideally Equities, Fixed Income, Index Management, or related financial services technology.
Familiarity with PostgreSQL.
Experience with workflow orchestration or Business Process Management technologies such as IBM BAW or Camunda.

Responsibilities

Lead and scale globally distributed engineering teams delivering resilient, high-performance platforms for the end-to-end index lifecycle.
Own end-to-end engineering delivery of scalable, resilient, secure, and highly available solutions for index management and operational workflows.
Provide technical and architectural direction for new capabilities, platform modernisation, and complex engineering decisions.
Ensure solutions meet engineering standards for maintainability, scalability, security, performance, and operational resilience.
Modernise legacy platforms and adopt cloud-native architecture when it provides business and technology benefits.
Establish and improve engineering practices for software design, coding standards, code reviews, automated testing, CI/CD, observability, security, and automation.
Embed appropriate testing and quality controls throughout the software delivery lifecycle.
Guide teams in designing and implementing APIs, microservices, event-driven architectures, data-processing solutions, and enterprise integrations.
Drive responsible adoption of AI-assisted engineering, Generative AI, agentic AI, and intelligent automation where they can improve productivity, quality, user experience, or operational efficiency.
Partner with Product Managers, Operations, Index Delivery & Management, Architecture, UX, and other stakeholders to turn business priorities into technology solutions and delivery plans.
Balance strategic transformation and new capabilities with reliability, support, and continued evolution of existing business-critical platforms.
Communicate technical strategy, delivery progress, risks, and complex engineering decisions to technical and non-technical audiences.
Build a high-performing culture focused on ownership, accountability, collaboration, engineering excellence, and continuous improvement.
Mentor and develop engineers, technical leads, and engineering managers, strengthening technical capability, leadership depth, and succession.
