About The Position

The Senior Engineering Manager in Index Tooling leads globally distributed engineering teams delivering and operating business-critical technology platforms for index management and operational workflows. The role combines engineering leadership, technical and architectural oversight, delivery accountability, and people development. Working closely with Product, Operations, Architecture, and Technology partners, the manager delivers strategic capabilities, designs operational platforms, and improves engineering quality, resilience, and effectiveness. The role owns end-to-end engineering delivery for scalable, secure, resilient, and highly available solutions. It guides platform modernisation, engineering standards, software delivery practices, testing and quality controls, and the adoption of cloud-native architecture and AI-assisted engineering where they offer clear benefits. The manager balances transformation and new capabilities with the reliability and continued evolution of existing platforms, while communicating strategy, progress, risks, and complex decisions to technical and non-technical stakeholders. The position also builds a culture of ownership, accountability, collaboration, engineering excellence, and continuous improvement, while mentoring engineers, technical leads, and engineering managers.

Requirements

15 or more years of software engineering experience, including designing, developing, and operating large-scale, business-critical enterprise applications.
Proven experience leading and developing engineering teams responsible for complex technology products and platforms.
Strong technical depth and ability to provide credible architectural guidance and constructively challenge engineering decisions.
Strong experience delivering modern web applications using Angular and/or React, JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML/CSS, and related UI technologies.
Strong experience with Java and designing and implementing RESTful APIs, GraphQL, and microservices.
Practical understanding of AI-assisted software engineering and intelligent automation, including security, governance, and control considerations.
Strong understanding of AWS cloud infrastructure and native services, including RDS, EC2, EKS/ECS, Lambda, SQS, SNS, API Gateway, and AWS Glue.
Strong understanding of API design, microservices, event-driven architecture, and enterprise integration patterns.
Extensive experience with modern software engineering practices, including automated testing, CI/CD, DevOps, Infrastructure as Code, observability, and automation.
Strong understanding of software security, performance, scalability, resilience, and production support.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including translating complex business and technical requirements into pragmatic solutions.
Experience working in agile delivery environments focused on collaboration, automation, and continuous improvement.
Experience working across Product, Architecture, Business Analysis, Quality Assurance, Delivery Management, and Technology Governance functions.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Ability to mentor, develop, and motivate engineers and engineering leaders.

Nice To Haves

Experience within financial markets, ideally Equities, Fixed Income, Index Management, or related financial services technology.

Responsibilities

Build and scale globally distributed engineering teams delivering resilient, high-performance platforms for the end-to-end index lifecycle.
Own end-to-end engineering delivery of scalable, resilient, secure, and highly available solutions supporting index management and operational workflows.
Provide technical and architectural direction for new capabilities, platform modernisation, and complex engineering decisions.
Ensure solutions meet engineering standards for maintainability, scalability, security, performance, and operational resilience.
Drive legacy platform modernisation and cloud-native architecture adoption where there is clear business and technology benefit.
Establish and improve engineering practices for software design, coding standards, code reviews, automated testing, CI/CD, observability, security, and automation.
Ensure testing and quality controls are embedded throughout the software delivery lifecycle.
Guide teams in designing and implementing APIs, microservices, event-driven architectures, data processing solutions, and enterprise integrations.
Promote responsible adoption of AI-assisted engineering, Generative AI, agentic AI, and intelligent automation where they can improve productivity, quality, user experience, or operational efficiency.
Partner with Product Managers, Operations, Index Delivery & Management, Architecture, UX, and other stakeholders to turn business priorities into technology solutions and delivery plans.
Balance strategic transformation and new capability delivery with reliability, support, and continued evolution of existing business-critical platforms.
Communicate technical strategy, delivery progress, risks, and complex engineering decisions to technical and non-technical audiences.
Build a high-performing engineering culture centred on ownership, accountability, collaboration, engineering excellence, and continuous improvement.
Mentor and develop engineers, technical leads, and engineering managers, strengthening technical capability, leadership depth, and succession.
