About The Position

Stord is seeking an energetic expert to join their rapidly growing team as a Senior Engineering Manager, Commerce. This leadership role will focus on building and running strong engineering teams, owning product delivery for customer-facing products, and contributing to strategic product decisions. The ideal candidate will maintain a hands-on approach to technical leadership, staying close to the code to make informed technical decisions and review designs. The Commerce group is Stord's newest and most strategic division, responsible for the shopper's experience from checkout through delivery, including delivery promises, order tracking, notifications, returns, and shipment protection. This area leverages real operational data from Stord's fulfillment network to provide accurate information and is building next-generation software with AI from the start. The role offers the opportunity to lead engineering for a highly visible part of Stord, influence product direction, shape AI engineering practices, and build new products with the backing of a large, established company.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years managing engineers directly: hiring, performance reviews, feedback, and career development
  • Strong engineering fundamentals. You can engage credibly in design discussions, code review, and architecture decisions, and you still build when it's needed
  • Experience with modern web development, ideally TypeScript, Node.js, and React
  • A track record of taking products from zero to one: launching something new, learning from customers, and iterating quickly
  • Hands-on experience with AI coding agents (Claude Code, Cursor, or similar), and experience leading a team's adoption of them while holding a high quality bar
  • A production mindset. Reliability, monitoring, and failure modes are part of how your teams build, not an afterthought
  • Customer Obsession: You start with the merchant and the shopper, and you measure success by what changes for them.
  • Product Ownership: You care deeply about the product your team builds. You have opinions about what it should be, and you hold your team to them.
  • Healthy Pushback: You challenge plans, priorities, and specs when they're wrong, with evidence. Once a decision is made, you commit to it.
  • Bias for Action: You move fast with incomplete information and know when something is good enough to put in front of customers and learn from.
  • Delegation & Multiplication: You scale through people, not heroics. You also aren't above doing the work yourself when the team needs it.
  • Strong Communication: You communicate clearly with engineers, PMs, and executives, and you translate technical complexity into business language and back.

Nice To Haves

  • Consumer commerce experience: checkout, payments, cart, order tracking, notifications, returns, or the Shopify app ecosystem
  • Startup or high-growth experience, especially building new products from scratch
  • Experience managing multiple engineering teams
  • Experience shipping LLM-powered features in production
  • Background in logistics, fulfillment, or e-commerce operations
  • Experience with GCP, event-driven architectures, or message streaming (Kafka, Redpanda, or similar)
  • Elixir/Phoenix familiarity

Responsibilities

  • Own the full people lifecycle for your teams: hiring, 1:1s, performance management, and career development
  • Build teams of product-minded engineers who own outcomes, not tickets
  • Give direct feedback, act early on performance, and grow engineers into bigger roles
  • Partner with Product and Design as an equal in deciding what to build, challenging assumptions and bringing your own point of view to the roadmap
  • Stay close to customers: talk with merchants, watch how shoppers use what we ship, and bring what you learn back to the team
  • Own outcomes after launch, measuring whether what we built actually changed things for merchants and their shoppers
  • Take new products from idea to launch quickly, cutting scope to get something real in front of customers and iterating from there
  • Set delivery goals and keep a predictable cadence without burying the team in process
  • Make clear calls on trade-offs between speed, scope, and quality, and explain the "why"
  • Engage credibly in architecture, design reviews, and code reviews across TypeScript services and React front ends
  • Get hands-on when it matters: prototype a new idea, unblock a critical path, or help during an incident
  • Own the reliability of what your teams run, from monitoring to incident response to root-cause fixes
  • Lead how your teams build with AI coding agents, from requirements through planning, coding, testing, and deployment
  • Push Stord's AI engineering practices forward: share what works across teams, set the quality bar for AI-assisted work, and make sure engineers keep their own technical judgment
  • Help shape how AI shows up in Commerce products, for shoppers and for the merchants who use them
