This is an advanced journey-level classification in the professional engineering series. Positions assigned to this class perform the most complex and difficult engineering assignments requiring a high degree of independent judgment, professional expertise, and decision-making authority. Incumbents independently manage major capital improvement projects from concept through completion, perform and oversee engineering design work, administer consultant and construction contracts, review and approve technical work products, and provide technical leadership to professional and technical staff. This classification is distinguished from the Associate Engineer by the level of responsibility, independence of action, complexity of assignments, and professional licensure requirements. While the Associate Engineer performs professional engineering work under general supervision, the Senior Engineer exercises substantial independent judgment in the development of engineering solutions, serves as project manager for major and complex projects, reviews and approves engineering work products, oversees the work of consultants, mentors engineering staff, and provides technical leadership on engineering matters. Receives general direction from the Engineering Manager and/or Public Works Director. May exercises technical and functional supervision over professional, technical, and administrative support staff as assigned, and coordinates the work of consultants and contractors.
