About The Position

The Senior Engineer serves as the Subject Matter Expert within the Data and Diagnostics (D&D) Group, providing technical leadership across advanced research and operational programs. Reporting to the D&D Manager, this role develops solutions to complex problems and guides engineers, scientists, and management on fabrication, machining, and instrumentation. The position oversees a technical facility, machine shop, and manufacturing systems, and provides engineering and fabrication support to keep experimental and operational systems mission-ready. The Senior Engineer leads machine shop operations, produces precision components using machining and additive manufacturing equipment, translates experimental needs into custom hardware, and designs components using SolidWorks or equivalent CAD software. The role also supports field programs, instrumentation and diagnostic systems, research and analysis, engineering compliance, procurement and subcontract activities, and proposal preparation. The primary work location is the Nevada National Security Site, approximately 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada. The schedule is four 10-hour days, Monday through Thursday, subject to change. The position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance and a valid driver’s license. Pre-placement physical examination and drug screening are required.

Requirements

  • Meet one of the stated education/licensure pathways: an ABET-accredited engineering bachelor’s degree for Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical engineering; a calculus-based STEM bachelor’s degree in engineering; or a Professional Engineer license.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience. Skill-building experience must demonstrate deeper technical specialization or additional cross-disciplinary knowledge; graduate research experience may be recognized.
  • Demonstrated subject matter expertise in fabrication and machining for research or operational applications.
  • Advanced proficiency with SolidWorks or equivalent CAD software.
  • Expert-level knowledge of precision machining, including mills, lathes, and EDM, and additive manufacturing, including 3D printing.
  • Experience developing field programs and selecting and implementing instrumentation systems.
  • Experience supporting proposals and/or subcontract preparation and evaluation.
  • Ability to provide technical guidance to engineers, scientists, and management.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable engineering codes, standards, and safety requirements.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills, and the ability to make independent decisions.
  • Ability to execute work in a disciplined manner and demonstrate compliance with laws, codes, orders, and MSTS policies and procedures.
  • Ability to prioritize and schedule multiple activities efficiently and meet deadlines.
  • Team orientation and ability to work closely with a diverse group of scientists and engineers.
  • Ability to build teaming relationships with technical and other company organizations.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance; U.S. citizenship and age 18 or older are required for the clearance.
  • Successful completion of required pre-employment drug screening and background reviews; the role may also require a counterintelligence evaluation, potentially including a polygraph examination.
