Senior Engineer - Search & Content team

Articore GroupNew York, NY
$155,000 - $165,000

About The Position

The Senior Search & Content Engineer builds and improves the systems that help millions of shoppers find the right product across Articore's marketplaces, Redbubble and TeePublic. This role designs, ships and maintains search, ranking and content-quality services across a catalogue of more than 40 billion products, where small gains in relevance translate directly into traffic, conversion and revenue. Working alongside a product manager, a tech lead, data scientists and engineers across three regions, this role turns broad discovery problems into measurable improvements customers can feel. As a senior contributor, it also shapes technical direction within the domain and lifts the capability of the engineers around it.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 3+ years hands-on with search or information retrieval systems (for example OpenSearch, Elasticsearch, Solr, or vector search).
  • Demonstrated ability to improve search relevance at scale — including experience with ranking, query analysis, and evaluation frameworks
  • Strong proficiency in at least one backend language (Python, Java, Scala, or Go) and comfort working across data pipelines and APIs
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues in a complex, high-traffic production environment.
  • Clear written communication and genuine comfort working asynchronously with colleagues across multiple time zones.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong written/async communication - able to contribute in a global team
  • Curious about customers and data - enjoys ambiguous discovery problems and pursues the root cause rather than the quick fix.
  • Collaborative by default - share context early, give direct feedback, and treat code review and design discussions as team learning, not gatekeeping
  • Curiosity about the user - care about why shoppers search the way they do and that curiosity shows up in how you measure and define "better"
  • Ownership mindset - take problems from ambiguous to shipped, without waiting for someone to hand you a fully scoped spec
  • Comfort with complexity - navigate messy, real-world data and systems without needing everything to be clean before you start

Responsibilities

  • Design and build the search, ranking and discovery services that return relevant results at marketplace scale.
  • Improve relevance and personalisation by developing, testing and measuring ranking changes, running experiments and reporting results against agreed success measures.
  • Develop content-quality systems that classify, enrich and moderate catalogue data so search results and category pages stay accurate and trustworthy.
  • Partner with product management, data science and search engine optimisation (SEO) specialists to translate business priorities into a clear, sequenced technical plan.
  • Own the reliability of the team's systems, including monitoring, alerting, performance tuning and incident response for services customers depend on continuously.
  • Lead technical design for significant pieces of work, producing proposals that others can review, challenge and build against.
  • Mentor engineers through code review, pairing and technical guidance, with particular focus on building search depth across the team's newer regions.
  • Apply artificial intelligence (AI) tooling in day-to-day engineering work, and evaluate where machine learning models can improve discovery while staying clear-eyed about their limits.
  • Break complex work into well-defined tasks that colleagues in other time zones can pick up and progress without waiting for a handover.
