Senior Engineer - GNC

AIRBUS U.S. Space & Defense•Merritt Island, FL

About The Position

Airbus U.S. is seeking an experienced Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) engineer to develop satellite GNC systems. The engineer will contribute throughout the development lifecycle, from requirements definition through operations, and work on spacecraft designs and mission challenges. The role focuses on developing GNC designs for spacecraft and accommodating mission payloads on Airbus platforms. It includes analyzing and developing sensors, actuators, algorithms, flight software, and GNC electronics; supporting requirements definition and flow-down; and promoting design-for-cost, manufacturability, and testability. The engineer will also support spacecraft product-roadmap and customization activities, and maintain and evolve Airbus spacecraft products while encouraging reuse of heritage designs and manufacturing infrastructure. The position is based in Merritt Island, Florida. Fully remote candidates located within the United States will also be considered. Periodic travel to Airbus U.S. facilities or partner companies is required, with occasional international travel to collaborate with European Airbus counterparts. U.S. citizenship is required, and the candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a government security clearance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM or related scientific field.
  • At least 8 years of spacecraft GNC system analysis, design, and verification experience with a bachelor's degree, or at least 6 years with a master's degree.
  • Proficiency with MATLAB/Simulink and STK.
  • Proficiency in modeling, simulating, and analyzing spacecraft GNC sensors, actuators, dynamics, and algorithms.
  • Familiarity and experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering (SysML/UML), including requirements, architectures, interfaces, and trade studies.
  • Familiarity with software development, verification, and validation.
  • Experience with object-oriented programming in C or C++ and scripting languages such as TCL or Python.
  • Experience designing guidance algorithms for low-thrust station keeping and orbit-change maneuvers.
  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a government security clearance.
  • Ability to meet the described physical requirements, including carrying and lifting items up to 40 lbs, sitting and standing for extended periods, and walking through office and outdoor areas including uneven surfaces.
  • Current work authorization; Airbus states it does not sponsor visas for U.S. positions unless specified.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in a STEM or related scientific field.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement GNC solutions for new spacecraft designs and mission payloads on Airbus spacecraft platforms.
  • Analyze, design, and develop GNC sensors, actuators, algorithms, flight software, and electronics.
  • Support subsystem requirements development and flow-down to components and parts throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Apply design-for-cost, design-for-manufacturability, and design-for-test approaches.
  • Reuse existing Airbus heritage products and identify when modifications are needed.
  • Drive multiple design activities across programs or missions, potentially including spacecraft, payload, satellite bus, and launch integration activities.
  • Contribute to cross-functional planning, coordination, and execution across engineering and integration activities.
  • Support the Airbus spacecraft development product roadmap, including design adjustments and schedule and cost targets aligned with future business captures.
  • Support definition of the spacecraft customization process for customer mission needs.
  • Perform GNC systems engineering activities to build, maintain, and evolve Airbus spacecraft products.
  • Promote cost savings through reuse of heritage platform designs and manufacturing infrastructure.
  • Travel periodically to Airbus U.S. facilities or partner companies and occasionally internationally to collaborate with European Airbus counterparts.
