Senior Engineer - Fault Management

AIRBUS U.S. Space & Defense, Inc.•Merritt Island, FL

About The Position

The Senior Systems Engineer contributes to the development of Fault Management architectures for Airbus U.S. satellite systems, including the heritage Arrow platform. The role covers the full development lifecycle, from requirements definition through operations, and may involve leading spacecraft, payload, and/or satellite bus activities. The position also supports Airbus spacecraft product roadmap development, customer-specific spacecraft customization, and ongoing development and evolution of spacecraft products.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in STEM or a related scientific area.
  • At least 8 years of experience with a bachelor's degree, or 6 years with a master's degree.
  • Proven experience in Fault Management for aerospace hardware and software systems across conceptual design and tradeoffs, detailed design, development, manufacture, integration, test, deployment, and operations.
  • Experience in Fault Management design and implementation.
  • Familiarity with space mission architectures beyond the satellite platform, including launch, flight operations, mission CONOPS, and user interfaces.
  • Familiarity with spacecraft systems engineering software tools, including DOORS.
  • Familiarity with Model-Based Systems Engineering, including SysML.
  • Experience with spacecraft subsystems including EPS, ADCS, CDH, TTC, propulsion, and thermal systems, and their primary failure modes.
  • Experience with spacecraft requirements definition and decomposition, and requirements verification and validation, such as Requirements Verification and Traceability Matrices.
  • Experience conducting or contributing to FMECA or FTA for complex hardware/software systems.
  • Ability to perform analyses in specialty engineering disciplines such as affordability, safety, reliability, maintainability, testability, human systems integration, survivability, vulnerability, susceptibility, system security, regulatory, certification, or product assurance.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely across multiple levels.
  • Team-minded and prepared to work in a multifunctional, multicultural, fast-moving, and technically complex environment.
  • Flexible attitude and strong initiative.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver results.
  • U.S. citizenship required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Government security clearance.
  • Current work authorization is required; Airbus generally does not sponsor visas for U.S. positions unless specified.
  • Able to read computer screens, electronic displays, and documents; hear conversations and safety warnings; operate common office and personal electronic equipment; carry and lift items up to 40 pounds; sit and stand for long periods; occasionally squat or kneel; and walk through office and outdoor areas, including uneven surfaces.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in STEM or a related scientific area.
  • Active DoD security clearance at Secret level or above.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, decompose, maintain, and own Fault Management requirements.
  • Conduct Fault Management system analyses, develop system- and subsystem-level designs, and perform trade studies with Systems Engineering and subsystem teams.
  • Contribute to the spacecraft Fault Management Concept of Operations and system-level FDIR architecture; create functional state machines for autonomous fault detection, isolation, and recovery; and evaluate ground-versus-onboard autonomy tradeoffs.
  • Develop and maintain Fault Management verification matrices and the Fault Management V&V Plan; develop fault-injection scenarios, coordinate fault-injection test procedures with Functional Validation, and review test results.
  • Support subsystem-level requirements development and flow-down to components and parts throughout the development lifecycle, particularly during system integration, test, and mission operations.
  • Drive multiple design activities across programs or missions, potentially leading spacecraft, payload, and/or satellite bus activities.
  • Participate in cross-functional planning, coordination, and execution of engineering and integration activities.
  • Support the spacecraft development product roadmap, including design adjustments and schedule and cost targets aligned with future business captures.
  • Support definition of the spacecraft customization process for customer mission needs.
  • Perform systems engineering activities to build, maintain, and evolve Airbus spacecraft products.
  • Promote cost savings by reusing heritage platform designs and manufacturing infrastructure for constellation opportunities.
  • Travel periodically (less than 20%) to Airbus U.S. facilities or partner companies.
