Senior Engineer, Autonomy Software Integration - San Mateo (R6246)

Shield AI•San Mateo, CA
•$153,000 - $230,900

About The Position

Shield AI is seeking an experienced Software Integration Engineer for its Hivemind Quality team. The team integrates, validates, and continually improves the Hivemind autonomy ecosystem, including autonomy behaviors, sensor processing, multi-agent coordination, ground-control systems, and embedded platforms. Its goal is to help autonomy developers build, test, and deploy autonomous applications for real-world mission objectives. In this role, you will become a power user of the Hivemind SDK, evaluate it from a customer perspective, develop and validate customer use cases, and provide actionable feedback to Engineering and Product teams. You will integrate new autonomy capabilities, assess feature completeness, and anticipate customer workflows and edge cases. The role connects engineering development with real-world autonomy applications to help ensure the platform supports reliable, mission-ready autonomous systems. You will develop expertise in the autonomy stack and integrate it across simulation, hardware-in-the-loop, and flight platforms. Work includes bringing up autonomy software on new robotic hardware, configuring sensors and interfaces, building integration and deployment tooling, supporting cross-platform compatibility, diagnosing system issues, improving CI/CD workflows, and verifying system requirements and interface contracts.

Requirements

  • Typically, 3–5 years of related experience with a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Robotics, or a related field, or 2 years of experience with a master's degree.
  • Proficiency in Python or C++.
  • Experience with autonomous systems, server applications, or middleware.
  • Demonstrated experience designing integration workflows, communicating system dependencies, and triaging and reporting integration defects across subsystem boundaries.
  • Proficiency with simulation tools and hardware-in-the-loop testing environments.
  • Strong expertise with CI/CD pipelines.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a track record of delivering high-quality software solutions.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate across teams and present to customers or technical leadership.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building complex systems and a strong understanding of software architecture and design principles.
  • Experience with hardware or embedded systems.
  • Expert knowledge of Python.
  • Experience with ROS.
  • Experience with white-box testing.
  • Familiarity with networking, operating systems, and radio communications.
  • Experience designing automated testing tools for GUI applications.
  • Experience designing automated testing tools for server applications.

Responsibilities

  • Develop deep expertise in Shield AI's AI-powered autonomy stack and become a systems integration expert for autonomous robotics.
  • Configure, deploy, and integrate multi-agent systems across simulation, hardware-in-the-loop, and flight platforms; understand the system end to end, from sensor inputs to autonomous behaviors.
  • Collaborate with development teams to integrate autonomy algorithms, perception pipelines, middleware, and platform interfaces, ensuring interoperability between components.
  • Lead integration of autonomy software onto new robotic hardware platforms.
  • Configure sensor drivers, communication interfaces, and platform adapters for autonomy stack functionality on prototype and production vehicles.
  • Implement integration frameworks, deployment scripts, and configuration management tools for Software-in-the-Loop, Hardware-in-the-Loop, and flight environments.
  • Work with other integration engineers to support compatibility across platforms, operating systems, and deployment configurations, and resolve integration issues across system boundaries.
  • Analyze logs, telemetry, and rosbag data to diagnose defects, isolate issues to subsystems, collaborate with developers on resolution, and create debugging analysis tools.
  • Partner with DevOps teams to improve integration pipelines, reduce build-to-deploy cycle times, support continuous integration, and define release-readiness checkpoints and criteria.
  • Work with engineers to validate system requirements and interface specifications, and help develop tooling for end-to-end compliance and traceability.
