Senior Embedded Software Engineering

Planted•Oakland, CA
•$180,000 - $230,000•Onsite

About The Position

Planted is an autonomous power deployment company that transforms power plants from bespoke construction projects into manufactured products by integrating planning software, high-density arrays, energy storage, and field robots. The company is scaling its work to deploy solar power and is seeking engineers to own important parts of its systems. As a core member of the R&D team, the Senior Embedded Software Engineer will own software that enables field robots to move, sense, and operate safely. The work spans CANopen devices on the machine bus, ROS2 nodes, control loops, and diagnostics used by field crews. The engineer will investigate robot failures using logs and CAN frames, trace them to root cause, and implement lasting fixes. The role involves close collaboration with mechanical, electrical, and field engineers. The position is based in Oakland, California, with regular travel to job sites. The target experience is five or more years. The salary range is listed as [MIN] to [MAX] USD, plus stock and benefits; compensation depends on relevant experience, job-specific skills, education, and work location.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, electrical engineering, robotics, or a similar field.
  • Experience shipping embedded or robotics software on real machines.
  • Strong modern C++ on Linux and solid Python skills for tooling, testing, and analysis.
  • Production experience with ROS2.
  • Experience with real-time Linux (PREEMPT_RT).
  • Hands-on experience with CANopen in real systems.
  • Track record debugging robot control systems end to end, from a field symptom to a root cause in code, configuration, or hardware.
  • Hands-on aptitude and comfort using an oscilloscope, CAN analyzer, and schematic.
  • Willingness to work in a startup environment, including time in the field.
  • Target experience of 5 or more years.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with ros2_control.
  • Experience with CiA 402 motion control.
  • Experience with RTK GNSS.
  • Experience with functional safety.
  • Experience with heavy equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop solutions for fully autonomous solar-array installation on rough, sloped terrain while maintaining millimeter positioning accuracy.
  • Design, build, and own ROS2 software for a hydraulic-powered, multi-ton robot.
  • Build computer vision and video-based verification to confirm that installations are correctly located in 3D space across many installs and large sites.
  • Define and implement a comprehensive telemetry system using AI-based tools for remote debugging and triage.
  • Develop and tune robot control software, from individual actuators to coordination across the full machine.
  • Integrate and configure precision CANopen for drives, valves, encoders, I/O, and sensors.
  • Contribute to safety-system design and build fault detection, safe-state handling, and interlocks to protect field teams.
  • Debug failures across hardware, firmware, middleware, and application code, and drive them to root cause.

Benefits

  • Meaningful equity through stock options.
  • Company holidays.
  • Paid time off (PTO).
  • In-office lunches.
