Embedded Software Engineering Manager

Formlabs•Somerville, MA
•$170,000 - $250,000

About The Position

Formlabs is hiring an Embedded Software Engineering Manager to lead the embedded software team responsible for firmware across its 3D printers, spanning microcontrollers and embedded Linux. The role owns delivery of firmware for current and upcoming printers, including program milestones, quality standards, and ship decisions made with program leads. The manager remains hands-on through architecture and code reviews, debugging on target hardware, and coding when needed. The role sets direction for a shared embedded platform, including drivers, communication stacks, RTOS and embedded Linux integration, bootloaders, firmware updates, and build infrastructure. It involves hiring and coaching engineers, addressing performance issues, partnering with electrical, systems integration, mechanical, and software teams from board bring-up through production, and tracing field failures to their root causes. The manager also builds test automation, CI, and static analysis to support reliable firmware updates across a large installed base, while prioritizing work based on customer impact.

Requirements

  • Experience as an embedded software engineer shipping production firmware in C and C++ for complex electromechanical products such as robots, consumer electronics, medical devices, or industrial equipment.
  • Experience leading a team of embedded or firmware engineers, including hiring and performance management.
  • Experience taking multiple products from prototype to volume production and supporting them after launch.
  • Comfort working across bare-metal microcontrollers, embedded Linux, and multicore processors, and using Python for tooling and testing.
  • Experience bringing up boards and peripherals, including ADC, PWM, SPI, I2C, CAN, and Ethernet.
  • Ability to read schematics and debug with an oscilloscope and logic analyzer.
  • Ability to profile and optimize firmware for performance, memory, and power.
  • Ability to diagnose issues across connected controllers using logs and trace data.
  • Ability to make decisions with incomplete information, move quickly, and explain how technical decisions affect customers.
  • Clear communication with electrical, mechanical, and software engineers, as well as product and program leads.

Nice To Haves

  • Linux kernel experience, such as writing device drivers.
  • Firmware experience with motion control, lasers or optics, or thermal systems.
  • Experience with over-the-air updates and device security for connected products.
  • Experience supporting a large fleet of connected devices in the field.
  • MISRA C or other safety-critical coding standards experience.
  • Passion for and experience with 3D printing.
  • Background in electronics or robotics.

Responsibilities

  • Hire embedded engineers, coach them, and address performance problems directly and early.
  • Partner with electrical engineering, systems integration, mechanical, and software teams from board bring-up through production.
  • Trace field failures to their root causes.
  • Build test automation, CI, and static analysis to support safe firmware updates across a large installed base.
  • Question requirements and cut work that does not matter to customers.
