Senior Embedded Software Engineer

ALTEN Technology•Mountain View, CA

About The Position

ALTEN Technology USA is seeking a Senior Embedded Software Engineer to develop firmware and embedded software for aircraft and ground asset hardware, including the software layer between hardware and higher-level systems. The role spans microcontroller firmware and embedded Linux on ARM and includes hardware bring-up, device drivers, sensor and peripheral integration, and reliability work for embedded systems used across a flight delivery ecosystem. This is a senior individual-contributor position with end-to-end ownership of embedded subsystems, from board bring-up through flight testing and regulated change control. The engineer works closely with Electrical, Mechanical, and Onboard Software teams, as well as Operations, Safety, and Production. The position also provides technical support for field and flight-test issues related to embedded subsystems. The salary range is $140,000–$160,000. The actual salary offered depends on factors including location and the candidate’s job-related knowledge, qualifications, skills, education, training, and experience. Candidates selected for employment must successfully complete a pre-employment drug screening.

Requirements

  • At least 6 years of production embedded software or firmware engineering experience.
  • Strong C/C++ design and programming skills.
  • Solid software engineering practices across the hardware/software/network development lifecycle, including code review, source control, build systems, test-driven development, and static analysis.
  • Proficiency with embedded Linux for ARM, including kernel, device drivers, and board support, as well as bare-metal or RTOS firmware development.
  • Deep functional knowledge of CAN, SPI, I2C, UART, and BLE, with experience selecting appropriate protocols and hardware for applications.
  • Experience selecting microcontrollers and bringing up peripherals, sensors, and actuators such as motors and encoders.
  • Ability to read board-level schematics and datasheets and debug at signal level using oscilloscopes and/or logic analyzers.
  • Proficiency with version control and peer code review workflows, such as Git.
  • Excellent technical communication and strong cross-disciplinary teamwork in a fast-paced environment.

Nice To Haves

  • UAV, autonomous robotics, aerospace, or other safety-critical regulated experience.
  • Experience with Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS).
  • Familiarity with autopilot stacks such as ArduPilot or PX4 and UAV/avionics technologies such as ADS-B, GPS/GNSS, LIDAR, and perception sensors.
  • Experience with build systems such as CMake, Make, or Waf, and containerized build/test environments such as Docker.
  • Experience optimizing C/C++ algorithms for high data throughput.
  • Experience with battery management systems or smart battery ICs.
  • Experience using AI coding assistants to accelerate development.
  • Relevant mechanical, aerospace, or electrical engineering experience.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, test, and maintain firmware and embedded software for aircraft and station systems, spanning microcontroller firmware and embedded Linux on ARM.
  • Bring up new boards and peripherals, write and debug device drivers, and integrate sensors and peripherals such as encoders, motors, IMUs, and LIDAR/RADAR.
  • Select and integrate microcontrollers, communication buses, and peripherals appropriate for new features and hardware revisions.
  • Drive embedded software verification and release from bench and simulation testing through flight test and production-fleet deployment.
  • Debug at the hardware/software boundary using oscilloscopes and logic analyzers, and review board-level schematics and datasheets with Electrical Engineering.
  • Provide senior technical support by triaging and resolving field and flight-test issues related to embedded subsystems.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across Electrical, Mechanical, Onboard Software, Operations, Safety, and Production.
