Senior Embedded Software Engineer

ALTEN Technology USA•Mountain View, CA
•$140,000 - $160,000

About The Position

ALTEN Technology USA is seeking a Senior Embedded Software Engineer to develop firmware and embedded software for aircraft and ground-asset hardware, bridging that hardware with higher-level software. The work spans microcontrollers, embedded Linux, and the buses and peripherals that connect them. The engineer will bring up new hardware, develop and maintain drivers and firmware for reliable sensors and actuators, and harden embedded systems used throughout the delivery ecosystem. This senior individual-contributor role owns embedded subsystems end-to-end, from board bring-up through flight testing and regulated change control. The engineer works closely with Electrical, Mechanical, and Onboard Software teams, along with Operations, Safety, and Production stakeholders. Responsibilities include developing software for aircraft and station systems, integrating hardware and peripherals, verifying and releasing embedded software, and providing technical support for field and flight-test issues. The listed salary range is $140,000–$160,000. Actual compensation depends on factors including location, job-related knowledge, qualifications, skills, education, training, and experience. Selected candidates must successfully complete a pre-employment drug screening.

Requirements

  • At least 6 years of production embedded software or firmware engineering experience.
  • Strong C/C++ design and programming skills.
  • Solid software engineering practices across the hardware, software, and network development lifecycle, including code review, source control, build systems, test-driven development, and static analysis.
  • Proficiency with embedded Linux for ARM, including kernel, device-driver, and board-support work, as well as bare-metal or RTOS firmware development.
  • Functional knowledge of CAN, SPI, I2C, UART, and BLE, including experience selecting suitable protocols and hardware for applications.
  • Experience selecting microcontrollers and bringing up peripherals, sensors, and actuators such as motors and encoders.
  • Ability to read board-level schematics and datasheets and debug at the signal level using oscilloscopes and/or logic analyzers.
  • Proficiency with version control and peer code-review workflows, such as Git.
  • Excellent technical communication and cross-disciplinary teamwork in a fast-paced environment.

Nice To Haves

  • UAV, autonomous robotics, aerospace, or other safety-critical regulated-industry experience.
  • Experience with Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS).
  • Familiarity with an autopilot stack such as ArduPilot or PX4, and UAV/avionics technologies such as ADS-B, GPS/GNSS, LIDAR, and perception sensors.
  • Experience with build systems such as CMake, Make, or Waf, and containerized build/test environments such as Docker.
  • Experience optimizing C/C++ algorithms for high data throughput.
  • Experience with battery management systems or smart battery ICs.
  • Experience using AI coding assistants to accelerate development.
  • Relevant mechanical, aerospace, or electrical engineering experience.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, test, and maintain firmware and embedded software for aircraft and station systems, including microcontroller firmware and embedded Linux on ARM.
  • Bring up new boards and peripherals, write and debug device drivers, and integrate sensors and peripherals such as encoders, motors, IMUs, and LIDAR/RADAR.
  • Select and integrate microcontrollers, communication buses, and peripherals appropriate for new features and hardware revisions.
  • Drive embedded software verification and release, from bench and simulation testing through flight testing and deployment across production fleets.
  • Debug at the hardware/software boundary using tools such as oscilloscopes and logic analyzers, and review board-level schematics and datasheets with Electrical Engineering.
  • Provide senior technical support by triaging and resolving field and flight-test issues related to embedded subsystems.
  • Collaborate with Electrical, Mechanical, Onboard Software, Operations, Safety, and Production stakeholders.
