Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer

HP•San Francisco, CA
•$140,000 - $225,000

About The Position

HP IQ, HP’s AI innovation lab, is seeking a Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer for its Connectivity team. The role focuses on developing firmware across RTOS and embedded Linux platforms, bringing up new hardware, and supporting core device subsystems from prototype through production and fleet deployment. It also enables on-device intelligence by integrating AI models, sensing algorithms, and local processing into lightweight, power-constrained edge devices. The engineer will work across hardware and software boundaries and collaborate with hardware, systems, and QA teams to diagnose system-level issues and drive root-cause fixes. The position contributes to firmware for connectivity, power, and sensor subsystems, as well as OTA updates, field diagnostics, and post-launch support.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • At least 5 years of embedded firmware development experience spanning RTOS and embedded Linux.
  • Strong C/C++ programming skills and a solid grounding in embedded fundamentals, including drivers, interrupts, memory and power constraints, and bootloaders.
  • Board-level debugging experience using tools such as JTAG, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers.
  • Familiarity with OTA update mechanisms, field telemetry, and firmware versioning.
  • Ability to work independently across hardware/software boundaries and communicate findings clearly to partners and leadership.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience running AI/ML inference on resource-constrained devices, including quantized models or on-device runtimes.
  • Background in sensor fusion or proximity/localization algorithms.
  • Experience working directly with silicon vendors on bring-up and optimization.
  • Familiarity with low-power design and battery-constrained firmware architecture.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and debug firmware across RTOS and embedded Linux platforms.
  • Lead hardware bring-up, including board bring-up, driver integration, and firmware support through production.
  • Develop and maintain firmware for connectivity, power, and other sensor subsystems.
  • Integrate lightweight model inference and sensing or proximity algorithms within compute, memory, and power constraints.
  • Support fleet-scale deployment through OTA updates, field diagnostics, and post-launch sustainment.
  • Collaborate with hardware, systems, and QA teams to troubleshoot system-level issues and drive root-cause fixes to closure.
