Senior Embedded Engineer- Developer Experience

Hubble NetworkSeattle, WA
$130,000 - $179,000

About The Position

Hubble Network is building a global Bluetooth® network for machine-to-machine connectivity, differentiating itself as the first modem-less and gateway-less, direct-to-satellite network from off-the-shelf Bluetooth® Low Energy chips. This role focuses on improving the developer experience on the Hubble network, aiming to simplify the process of connecting devices to satellites. The position involves making device bring-up fast and straightforward across various platforms and silicon families, and ensuring that firmware updates, configuration changes, and diagnostics work reliably over a constrained satellite link. A significant part of the role includes scaling the hardware-in-the-loop (HITL) testing infrastructure to ensure the reliability of the network and SDK.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of deep hands-on firmware experience in C, with a track record of shipping or supporting production embedded systems on BLE-capable silicon.
  • Substantial Zephyr RTOS experience (devicetree, Kconfig, west, out-of-tree modules, board porting).
  • Familiarity with at least one of nRF Connect SDK, ESP-IDF, or TI SimpleLink.
  • Demonstrated experience building automated test infrastructure for embedded targets (CI on real hardware, pytest and/or Twister, self-hosted runners, test reporting).
  • Solid understanding of OTA update mechanisms, power optimization, and memory-constrained environments.
  • Experience with embedded build systems (CMake, Make) and cross-compilation toolchains, including porting to constrained targets.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience working directly with external developers or customers (support, enablement, developer relations, technical content, or field bring-up).
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident ("green card holder") as defined by ITAR (22 CFR §120.15).

Nice To Haves

  • Upstream contributions to Zephyr, or an active role in the embedded open-source community.
  • A public body of technical writing, talks, or demos aimed at embedded developers.
  • Prior experience with IoT platforms, device management/fleet tooling, asset tracking, or connectivity products at scale.
  • RF fundamentals: link budget reasoning, antenna tuning, EIRP measurement.
  • Cryptographic know-how; experience with PSA or TF-M is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Own the developer bring-up path onto the Hubble network, including reference applications, board support, samples, and quickstarts across supported SoC portfolios.
  • Port and maintain the Hubble SDK across Zephyr, nRF Connect SDK, ESP-IDF, and vendor SDKs, driving abstractions for easier chip family integration.
  • Bring up new hardware targets end-to-end, including schematic review, RF sanity checks, antenna tuning, conducted power measurement, and successful satellite packet transmission.
  • Author developer-facing technical material such as integration guides, application notes, and worked examples.
  • Partner with vendors and dev-board ecosystem partners to integrate Hubble support into existing developer boards.
  • Design and implement device-side firmware update, remote configuration, and command handling that function over an intermittent, bandwidth-limited satellite link, including staged rollout and rollback.
  • Build the device-side diagnostics and logging capabilities, determining what endpoints should record and how developers can access this information.
  • Collaborate with platform and data teams to make fleet health metrics (link performance, retry behavior, packet success rate, power draw) observable and self-serviceable.
  • Incorporate field and integration learnings back into SDK priorities as reusable modules and tooling.
  • Extend the HITL infrastructure for automated SDK changes on real silicon, including CI runners, board provisioning, flashing/reset control, and serial/RF instrumentation.
  • Build automated test suites in pytest and Twister covering SDK samples, integration paths, OTA flows, and power behavior across the board matrix.
  • Make test results legible through reporting and historical trending to facilitate quick issue diagnosis.
  • Contribute to gateway-side and mobile SDK HITL work alongside the embedded validation team.
  • Work closely with marketing on developer-focused content, launches, and dev-board programs.
  • Represent Hubble in the open-source embedded community, including upstream contributions.
  • Act as an internal advocate for the developer experience, identifying and resolving friction points.
