Senior Electrical Hardware Test Engineer, Energy Storage

Redwood Materials•San Francisco, CA
•$145,000 - $192,000

About The Position

Redwood Materials is hiring a Senior Electrical Hardware Test Engineer to validate the high-voltage power electronics used in energy storage systems. The role designs and executes validation tests on components and assemblies operating at 400–2000VDC and 480–800VAC. The engineer works from schematics, Altium layouts, and datasheets to understand circuit behavior—including switching topologies, gate drive, isolation, protection, and thermal behavior—and apply that understanding to test design. The role involves hands-on circuit probing and fault isolation, with root-cause investigations carried through to the component level. The engineer also designs and sources custom PCBAs for characterization, builds supporting test infrastructure across electrical, mechanical, and software domains, and develops Python tools for test automation and data analysis. In collaboration with design, reliability, and abuse engineers, the engineer contributes to FMEAs and test plans, analyzes test data, and drives design and process improvements.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of technical experience in test engineering, hardware validation, or power electronics development.
  • Hands-on experience with high-voltage systems operating at 400–2000VDC and 480–800VAC.
  • Proficiency with Altium or similar EDA tools and fluency in reading schematics, layouts, and component datasheets.
  • Comfort working at the bench with oscilloscopes, probes, and general lab instrumentation.
  • Working knowledge of power conversion, including switching topologies, gate drive, isolation, protection, and thermal behavior.
  • Demonstrated root-cause and failure-analysis experience, tracing failures to a component or mechanism rather than only documenting symptoms.
  • Proficiency in object-oriented programming; Python is preferred.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to engage effectively with stakeholders at all organizational levels, including executives.
  • A get-it-done attitude and willingness to take on work of any size.

Responsibilities

  • Design, set up, and execute validation tests on high-voltage power electronics components and assemblies.
  • Read and work from schematics, Altium layouts, and datasheets to understand circuit behavior and inform test design.
  • Debug and diagnose hardware hands-on by probing circuits, isolating faults, and driving root-cause investigations to the component level.
  • Design, fabricate, and source custom PCBAs for component-level characterization and testing.
  • Specify and build supporting test infrastructure across electrical, mechanical, and software domains, with an emphasis on electrical scope.
  • Develop and maintain Python test-automation and data-analysis tools.
  • Collaborate with design, reliability, and abuse engineers to generate FMEAs and test plans.
  • Analyze complex test data and drive design and process enhancements.
