Senior Electrical Hardware Test Engineer, Energy Storage

Redwood Materials•San Francisco, CA
•$145,000 - $192,000

About The Position

Redwood Materials is hiring a Senior Electrical Hardware Test Engineer to validate the high-voltage power electronics used in its energy storage systems. The engineer will design and execute validation tests for components and assemblies operating at 400–2000VDC and 480–800VAC, using schematics, Altium layouts, and datasheets to understand circuit behavior and inform test design. The role includes hands-on hardware debugging and root-cause investigations, custom PCBA design and sourcing, and development of test infrastructure and Python tools for automation and data analysis. The engineer will collaborate with design, reliability, and abuse engineers on FMEAs and test plans, then use test findings to drive design and process improvements. The position is full-time. The California salary range is $145,000–$192,000 USD, with compensation based on experience, education, and skills.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of technical experience in test engineering, hardware validation, or power electronics development.
  • Hands-on experience with high-voltage systems operating at 400–2000VDC and 480–800VAC.
  • Proficiency with Altium or similar EDA tools and ability to read schematics, layouts, and component datasheets.
  • Comfort working at the bench with oscilloscopes, probes, and general lab instrumentation.
  • Working knowledge of power conversion, including switching topologies, gate drive, isolation, protection, and thermal behavior.
  • Demonstrated root-cause and failure-analysis experience, tracing failures to a component or mechanism rather than only documenting symptoms.
  • Proficiency in object-oriented programming; Python is preferred.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to engage stakeholders at all organizational levels, including executives.
  • A get-it-done attitude and willingness to take on work of any size.

Responsibilities

  • Design, set up, and execute validation tests on high-voltage power electronics components and assemblies.
  • Read schematics, Altium layouts, and datasheets to understand circuit behavior and inform test design.
  • Debug and diagnose hardware hands-on, isolate faults, and drive root-cause investigations to the component level.
  • Design, fabricate, and source custom PCBAs for component-level characterization and testing.
  • Specify and build supporting test infrastructure across electrical, mechanical, and software domains, with an emphasis on electrical scope.
  • Develop and maintain Python tools for test automation and data analysis.
  • Collaborate with design, reliability, and abuse engineers to generate FMEAs and test plans.
  • Analyze complex test data and drive design and process enhancements.
