About The Position

Digi International is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join its Wireless Design Services team as a hands-on hardware designer. The role focuses on electrical hardware design for embedded products, many of which incorporate wireless technologies. The engineer owns customer-product electrical designs and takes them from concept through verification, certification, and production release. This is an individual-contributor position for an experienced engineer expected to deliver independently and serve as a technical reference for the team. The position is hybrid and based at Digi International’s global headquarters in Hopkins, Minnesota. The engineer works with customers and cross-functional teams to develop practical, reliable, production-ready connected products. Digi’s Wireless Design Services team provides end-to-end product development expertise, including architecture, hardware and firmware design, testing, certification, and manufacturing support.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 5 years of progressive experience designing commercial electronic products, or at least 3 years with an M.S.
  • Experience taking a hardware design from concept through manufacturing and production release.
  • Hands-on experience across the hardware design cycle, including circuit design, schematic capture, component selection, PCB layout direction and review, board bring-up, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience designing embedded hardware using microcontrollers, processors, sensors, power supplies, and digital communication interfaces.
  • Working understanding of signal integrity, thermal mitigation, power analysis, and impedance matching in real designs.
  • Ability to explain circuit and architecture tradeoffs clearly to technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • Demonstrated initiative, ownership, and ability to deliver technical work independently while managing multiple priorities.
  • Valid work authorization in the United States at the time of application; visa or residency sponsorship is not available.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience developing connected or wireless products from concept through production.
  • Working knowledge of RF fundamentals and wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth/BLE, Zigbee, cellular, GNSS/GPS, or LoRa.
  • Experience leading or supporting regulatory and product certification activities, such as FCC, UL, ETL, ETSI, PTCRB, or other applicable standards.
  • Experience in product development consulting, design services, or another customer-facing engineering environment.
  • Systems engineering exposure, including requirements definition, architecture, V&V, and product lifecycle management.
  • Familiarity with Digi System-on-Modules (SOMs), Single-Board Computers (SBCs), or XBee products.
  • Experience using scripting or automation to improve engineering development, testing, or analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Own electrical design for embedded and wireless products from concept through production, selecting appropriate design approaches and making defensible design decisions.
  • Design electronic circuits, select components, create and review schematics, and direct PCB layout.
  • Build, bring up, test, troubleshoot, and improve electronic circuits and embedded hardware platforms with minimal oversight.
  • Evaluate and communicate design tradeoffs involving performance, reliability, power, cost, manufacturability, component availability, and product lifecycle.
  • Participate in customer discussions to understand requirements, clarify technical challenges, and present design recommendations.
  • Translate customer and system needs into electrical requirements, interfaces, design specifications, and verification plans.
  • Partner with firmware, RF, software, mechanical, manufacturing, and project management teams throughout product development.
  • Lead hardware integration, verification, validation, and certification activities within the electrical design scope, and support production and sustaining engineering.
  • Identify technical risks early, propose mitigations, and communicate clearly with internal stakeholders and customers.
  • Mentor entry-level engineers, contribute to team best practices, and drive continuous improvement in design quality.
