About The Position

Merrick and Company is a nationally known multi-office and multi-discipline firm with over 70 years of experience and offices worldwide. We are seeking an experienced Senior Laboratory / Facility Electrical Engineer for our Life Sciences business unit in our Kanata office. This role is for candidates who desire personal and professional growth, have a strong understanding of design and construction document processes, and are adaptable to various project lengths. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, motivated, innovative, articulate, self-disciplined, and confident in a demanding, fast-paced environment. This position requires a competent professional engineer responsible for all phases of engineering production and BIM, from programming through construction administration. This includes interpreting, organizing, executing, and coordinating the design and production efforts for large or complex projects.

Requirements

  • Twelve (12) years of experience in facility Electrical Engineering design.
  • Experienced using REVIT/AutoCAD or other design software-based drawing generation.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license.
  • Proficient using Microsoft Office Excel & Word.
  • Experience with technical codes such as NEC, NESC, NFPA, IEEE is required.
  • Client requirements for this position require Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status qualified with minimum Reliability clearance level.
  • Local candidates are preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience using electrical calculation tools is desired, including lighting and power software such as AGi32, Elum Tools, SKM Power Tools, ETAP, and EasyPower.
  • Experience with USDA, ARS, CDC and other laboratory clients is highly desired.

Responsibilities

  • Design of electrical systems for facilities / laboratories for Government, University, and private clients.
  • Provide conceptual / detailed design and analysis for facility power distribution (600V), site power distribution (15kV), emergency power generation, grounding and lightning protection, lighting design, telecommunications (voice/data), fire alarm / mass notification, security, access control, and special systems.
  • Provide supporting documentation such as calculations, reports, and specifications.
  • Meet with clients to prepare and/or validate proposed scope of work.
  • Prepare fee proposals for engineering design work.
  • Work with other disciplines to ensure accuracy of the package, meet schedule, and budget commitments and meet expectations for attendance and punctuality.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely; both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work effectively within a collaborative team environment.
  • Ability to complete tasks with accuracy and with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to consistently meet deadlines, completing tasks as previously defined.
  • Ability to travel as needed.
  • Ability to write and edit specifications.
  • Work in a design team environment, including directing and mentoring the work of junior engineers and designers, and delegating work as required as well as provide management of the local team.
  • Capable of performing all of the above with minimal direction.
