About The Position

Timmons Group is seeking a Senior Electrical Designer to join its Energy team supporting utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects. The designer provides electrical drafting and design support throughout conceptual, preliminary, and final design, working closely with project engineers and project managers to develop complete, coordinated design packages for renewable energy projects. The role develops and revises electrical drawings and documentation for PV, BESS, and medium-voltage systems, including layouts, diagrams, plans, profiles, schedules, bills of materials, construction details, and installation details. It incorporates engineering calculations, vendor information, client standards, markups, sketches, and engineering direction, and assists with issued-for-construction drawing packages. The designer coordinates with civil, structural, substation, SCADA, and other disciplines; reviews drawings for accuracy, consistency, constructability, and project-standard compliance; and may assist with CADD standards and mentoring less-experienced designers and CADD users. Timmons Group is a full-service engineering and technology firm with 22 offices throughout the Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, and South Central United States. The company provides engineering, environmental, economic development, GIS/geospatial technology, landscape architecture, and surveying services. It describes itself as an employer of choice focused on resources, technology, culture, and career development. Candidates are expected to share the company’s Vision, Mission, and Shared Values. The company is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer.

Requirements

  • Associate degree or technical certificate in computer-aided drafting/design, engineering technology, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • At least five years of electrical drafting/design experience; utility-scale solar, BESS, power generation, substations, or other power-delivery projects are preferred areas of experience.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and experience developing multi-sheet electrical construction drawing packages.
  • Working knowledge of electrical equipment, conduit and cable routing, grounding, and medium-voltage electrical systems.
  • Ability to interpret electrical one-line diagrams, engineering markups, equipment drawings, and vendor documentation.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple design assignments and work effectively independently and as part of a multidisciplinary project team.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to work at a dynamic pace; the description characterizes desired candidates as high-energy, creative, flexible, patient, and self-starting.
  • Commitment to the company’s Vision, Mission, and Shared Values.

Nice To Haves

  • Direct experience designing utility-scale solar PV and/or BESS facilities.
  • Experience with 34.5 kV or similar medium-voltage collector systems.
  • Experience with overhead medium-voltage distribution or collector systems, including pole layouts, conductor routing, line crossings, and overhead-to-underground transitions.
  • Familiarity with overhead line design considerations, including clearances, pole loading, guying, conductor selection, and utility design standards.
  • Experience developing IFC-level renewable energy drawing packages.
  • Familiarity with PV inverters, BESS PCS equipment, medium-voltage transformers, switchgear, collection systems, and equipment vendor drawings.
  • Experience coordinating electrical designs with civil/site design and substation/interconnection design.
  • AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation, or other relevant design software experience.

Responsibilities

  • Develop electrical design drawings for utility-scale PV and BESS projects using AutoCAD.
  • Prepare and revise electrical site plans, equipment layouts, one-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, grounding plans, underground conduit and cable plans, and installation details.
  • Develop medium-voltage collector system layouts, including equipment locations, underground cable routing, trenching, conduit requirements, and overhead medium-voltage collection and interconnection lines.
  • Develop overhead medium-voltage line layouts, including pole locations, conductor routing, line crossings, equipment locations, and transitions between overhead and underground systems.
  • Prepare plans, profiles, details, material schedules, and other design documentation for overhead and underground medium-voltage systems.
  • Develop BESS equipment layouts and electrical interconnections for batteries, inverters/power conversion systems (PCS), transformers, switchgear, and other balance-of-system equipment.
  • Develop PV electrical layouts, including inverter locations, medium-voltage equipment, and DC and AC collection systems.
  • Prepare equipment schedules, cable schedules, bills of materials, construction details, and other project deliverables.
  • Coordinate electrical drawings with civil, structural, substation, SCADA, and other project disciplines.
  • Coordinate overhead medium-voltage designs with civil/site layouts, access roads, utilities, environmental constraints, and other project infrastructure.
  • Incorporate engineering calculations, equipment vendor information, client standards, markups, sketches, and engineering direction into design documents.
  • Assist with development of issued-for-construction drawing packages.
  • Review drawings for accuracy, consistency, constructability, and compliance with project standards.
  • Work independently on design assignments while coordinating closely with the project engineer and project manager.
  • Assist with CADD standards and drawing organization, and mentor less-experienced designers and CADD users.
