About The Position

GenScript is seeking a hands-on Senior EHS Specialist for its New Jersey research labs, including BSL-2 areas. This role involves building EHS programs at existing labs, integrating EHS into the design of new facilities, and managing safety on construction projects. The specialist will work independently and own their programs from inception to completion. Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in EHS, environmental science, engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of EHS work experience.
  • Experience in research labs or biotech/pharma, ideally including BSL-2.
  • Experience working on facility design reviews and construction site safety.

Nice To Haves

  • CSP, ASP, CHMM, or a similar certification is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Build and run EHS programs at existing labs, including chemical hygiene, hazard communication, PPE, lockout/tagout, and waste management, and develop associated procedures and training.
  • Support BSL-2 biosafety, including biological waste management, spill response, and lab audits.
  • Conduct regular lab and facility inspections and check safety equipment such as fume hoods, eyewash stations, safety showers, and fire extinguishers.
  • Maintain the chemical inventory and SDS library, ensuring proper chemical storage and labeling.
  • Perform exposure monitoring (e.g., air sampling, noise checks) and implement controls based on results.
  • Review new equipment, lab moves, and process changes for EHS risks before implementation.
  • Review facility designs for EHS considerations, including lab layout, ventilation, chemical and biological storage, and egress, and oversee these aspects through construction and startup.
  • Oversee contractor safety on construction sites, including reviewing safety plans, issuing work permits, conducting site walks, and following up on findings.
  • Keep emergency response plans current and conduct drills.
  • Train new hires, lab staff, and contractors, and maintain training records.
  • Investigate incidents and near misses, identify root causes, and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
  • Maintain OSHA logs, NJ Right to Know filings, waste manifests, permits, and other records, and assist during regulatory and insurer visits.
  • Track EHS metrics and report on open issues.
