About The Position

This role is for a Senior Director, Platform Engineering, based remotely nationwide. The company, Vituity, is dedicated to transforming healthcare and improving lives through a collaborative culture. They emphasize team accomplishments and a "culture of brilliance," where employees work together to tackle healthcare challenges. Vituity has a presence in over 900 practices nationwide, serving millions of patients annually, and offers the flexibility to relocate jobs within their network. The opportunity involves managing staff engineers, holding technical standards, managing offshore relationships, and leading a blended onshore and offshore organization. The role requires designing and developing the platform engineering team, determining platform survival and retirement, and establishing shared tools, standards, and governance. A key responsibility is managing team ownership of production AI systems, including retrieval pipelines, model orchestration, evaluation, and data infrastructure, with a strong focus on accuracy, safety, and clinical metrics. The position also involves overseeing model sourcing (build vs. buy), judging agentic workflow performance, and managing the development lifecycle using AI agents with appropriate controls for a healthcare environment. The role demands instilling accountability for correctness, safety, and security, ensuring products are developed in a regulated environment (HIPAA, PHI handling, access controls), and implementing governance as guardrails. Collaboration with Revenue Cycle, Information Security, IT Architecture, and Application Operations is expected, as is representing Engineering to Clinical and Executive Leadership.

  • Lead a blended onshore and offshore organization as a single engineering capability.
  • Design and develop the platform engineer team.
  • Manage platform engineers owning hiring, performance, growth, retention, leave cover, and the day to day technical direction of their work.
  • Determine which platforms survive and what is retired; consolidate overlapping internal tools to one or two platforms; absorb VIA work.
  • Build and establish the shared tools, standards, controls, governance, shared capabilities, security model and observability that other teams build on without needing engineering’s direct involvement.
  • Manage team ownership of production AI systems: oversee the team design and delivery of the retrieval pipelines, model orchestration, evaluation harnesses and data infrastructure that carry live patient, claims and operational data; enforce evaluation and monitoring as a required part of the definition of done, including accuracy, hallucination and safety testing, drift detection, human in the loop review, and clinically meaningful quality metrics.
  • Oversee model sourcing: build verses buy across foundation models, hosted interfaces, open weight models anything trained in house, with a clear eye view of cost, latency, privacy and vendor risk.
  • Judge against throughput and quality change from agentic workflows, and support team development of the platform underneath them: orchestration, context management, permissions, observability.
  • Manage team development in and of agent-augmented development lifecycle as a platform capability: agentic coding, automated test generation, code review, migration, refactoring, documentation and incident triage, with the provenance, review gates, security scanning and the intellectual property and compliance controls a healthcare environment requires.
  • Instill team accountability for correctness, safety and security within the engineering organization; it is never delegated to AI/Models.
  • Ensure products are developed correctly in a regulated environment, including HIPAA, protected health information handling, auditability, access controls and applicable clinical and payer requirements.
