About The Position

The Senior Director of Technology Enterprise Systems & Security serves as a key member of the Office of Technology leadership team, responsible for the design, integration, security, and reliability of Boston Public Schools’ enterprise technology systems. Building upon the foundation of datacenter & security management plus system integrations, this role expands to oversee identity and access management, enterprise platforms, system integrations, data engineering, and cybersecurity operations. The Senior Director is responsible for aligning system architecture, data flow, and security practices into a cohesive and scalable enterprise environment that supports teaching, learning, and district operations. This position leads the development and execution of a unified enterprise systems strategy, ensuring that applications, integrations, and infrastructure operate as an interconnected ecosystem rather than isolated systems. The Senior Director plays a critical role in reducing complexity, eliminating single points of failure, strengthening cybersecurity posture, and enabling reliable, secure access to systems and data across the district.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related technical field
  • 7–10+ years of experience in enterprise systems, application development, or systems integration
  • 5+ years of experience leading technical teams in complex environments
  • Strong understanding of system architecture, integrations, identity management, and enterprise platforms
  • Experience integrating third-party cloud-based systems and applications
  • Demonstrated experience building and scaling technical systems and teams
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Current authorization to work in the United States
  • An understanding of and commitment to gain greater understanding of what is necessary for an urban school system to enjoy continuous improvement in an increasingly complex and competitive environment.
  • A deeply held and unyielding belief in the overarching mission of public education.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and evolution of the district’s enterprise systems architecture, ensuring alignment across applications, identity systems, integrations, and data platforms
  • Oversee system integration strategy, including APIs, data pipelines, and interoperability across core platforms
  • Establish standards and best practices for system design, configuration, and integration to reduce fragmentation and improve scalability
  • Evaluate build vs. buy decisions and make recommendations on enterprise application strategy and vendor solutions
  • Oversee enterprise identity and access management systems, including Active Directory, Google Workspace, SSO, and identity provisioning systems
  • Ensure secure, reliable access to systems for all students and staff
  • Establish and enforce standards for authentication, authorization, and account lifecycle management
  • Align identity systems with security, compliance, and operational requirements
  • Lead the design, development, and maintenance of system integrations and data pipelines across the district’s technology ecosystem
  • Oversee integration of third-party systems, cloud platforms, and internal applications
  • Establish development, testing, and release standards for integration and application work, including documentation and quality assurance practices
  • Ensure reliable, scalable data movement into enterprise data platforms (e.g., Snowflake)
  • Lead the development and maturation of the district’s cybersecurity program, aligned with industry standards (e.g., NIST)
  • Oversee endpoint security, web filtering, threat detection, and incident response processes
  • Establish and enforce security policies, controls, and monitoring practices
  • Identify, assess, and mitigate risks across systems, applications, and integrations
  • Oversee administration and management of enterprise platforms, including endpoint management systems, application platforms, and core services
  • Ensure systems are configured, maintained, and monitored to meet performance, reliability, and security standards
  • Eliminate single points of failure through documentation, cross-training, and shared ownership models
  • Ensure high availability and operational continuity across critical systems
  • Establish governance structures, technical standards, and operating procedures for enterprise systems and integrations
  • Define and enforce standards for development, configuration, testing, and release management
  • Ensure proper documentation, system monitoring, and operational readiness across all platforms
  • Partner with Strategy & Operations to align technical execution with broader organizational priorities
  • Lead and develop a high-performing team responsible for enterprise systems, integrations, and security, including: Enterprise Systems Administrators, Integration Engineers, Cybersecurity staff
  • Build team capacity across identity, integration, and security domains
  • Establish clear roles, responsibilities, and accountability across technical functions
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, ownership, and continuous improvement
