About The Position

The Senior Director of Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) provides enterprise-wide leadership for the development and execution of policies, programs, and strategies that ensure regulatory compliance, operational safety, and environmental stewardship. This role drives a proactive safety culture across multiple business lines, including stevedoring, terminal security, and ground services, by integrating HSE priorities into business strategy and operational execution. The Senior Director partners with executive leadership to minimize risk, enhance performance, and support sustainable operations across a national footprint.

Requirements

  • Candidates may qualify through a bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field, or through 10+ years of progressive HSE leadership experience in maritime, manufacturing, construction, logistics, military, or related operational environments.
  • An equivalent combination of education and relevant civilian and/or military experience will be considered.
  • Expert understanding of OSHA, EPA, NFPA, and applicable health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of HSE management systems, risk assessment methodologies, and regulatory compliance frameworks.
  • Understanding of incident investigation, root cause analysis, and corrective action processes.
  • Familiarity with performance metrics such as LTIFR, C/MH, and environmental compliance indicators.
  • Ability to develop and execute strategic HSE initiatives across multiple business lines.
  • Strong leadership and organizational capability to influence and align stakeholders at all levels.
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills to interpret data and drive decision-making.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with executives, regulatory agencies, and operational teams.
  • Ability to lead change management and continuous improvement initiatives.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Experience managing multi-site operations or geographically dispersed teams
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), or similar.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and leads enterprise-wide HSE and risk management strategies aligned with organizational goals, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
  • Establishes and implements HSE policies and programs to ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, NFPA, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Serves as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies and industry organizations, ensuring effective communication, compliance, and audit readiness.
  • Defines and integrates long-term HSE objectives into business strategy, driving alignment across all business lines and operational functions.
  • Conducts risk assessments and implements mitigation strategies to reduce safety, environmental, and financial risks across operations.
  • Establishes, monitors, and analyzes key performance indicators (KPIs) including LTIFR, Cost per Man Hour (C/MH), environmental compliance rates, and near-miss frequency to drive performance improvements.
  • Provides executive leadership with regular reporting and insights on HSE performance, trends, and strategic initiatives.
  • Leads incident management processes, including investigations of workplace incidents and environmental events, ensuring root cause analysis and corrective actions are implemented.
  • Develops, implements, and oversees HSE training programs to ensure workforce competency in safety practices, hazard recognition, and emergency response.
  • Leads and supports safety leadership programs, such as Area Safety Leads, to drive accountability, engagement, and execution of corporate HSE initiatives.
  • Promotes a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement through engagement initiatives, communication, and leadership alignment.
  • Leads internal and third-party audits and ensure corrective action plans are developed, implemented, and monitored for effectiveness.
  • Drives continuous improvement initiatives using methodologies such as Lean or Six Sigma to enhance HSE performance and operational efficiency.
  • Oversees resource allocation and budget management for HSE programs, training, and compliance initiatives.
  • Leverages technology, data, and automation to improve HSE reporting, tracking, and operational effectiveness.
  • Provides operational leadership across locations by maintaining flexibility in scheduling and traveling to sites as needed to support business continuity and performance.
