About The Position

Bread & Roses Community Fund is seeking a deeply skilled leader in development, communications, and management to align their experience with their commitment to social justice. This role reports directly to the Executive Director and will partner closely in establishing and implementing a fundraising and communications plan with a four-person team. The position offers the opportunity to build on a significant investment in the organization's infrastructure, including new platforms for relationship management, donor and event tracking, and email marketing. The first year will focus on assessing current practices and implementing enhancements, followed by increasing external responsibility in managing a donor portfolio and engaging new donors. As an executive leader, the Senior Director will be an active member of the Senior Council, collaborating on organizational priorities and providing staff-wide support.

Requirements

  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission and values of Bread & Roses in organizing for racial, gender, and economic justice through donor engagement.
  • Belief in the value of donors at all levels and a desire to expand a diverse donor community.
  • Deep interpersonal communication skills and appreciation of collaboration.
  • Successful track record overseeing a team with at least two direct reports, providing supportive management and mentorship.
  • Demonstrated history of leading a team toward an ambitious goal through project management, delegation, and planning.
  • Comfort working with consultants and vendors and managing for effectiveness.
  • Experience developing and implementing fundraising systems, preferably in a grassroots or base-building organization.
  • History of working with CRM systems, donor databases, digital fundraising tools, and analyzing data to reach fundraising goals.
  • Understanding of moves management and engagement across the donor spectrum (institutional, small-dollar, high-net-worth).
  • Experience planning and implementing a communications strategy across multiple platforms (newsletters, email, website).
  • Outstanding writing and editing skills.
  • History of team leadership and cross-departmental collaboration.
  • Enthusiasm to contribute to an evolving and emerging team culture.
  • Proactive approach to working with colleagues and supporting open communication.
  • Deep communication and planning skills to work with the Executive Director.
  • Capacity to understand and manage competing priorities within the team and organization.

Responsibilities

  • Project manage, prioritize, and delegate to ensure the Development and Communications team contributes to strategic goals and departmental objectives.
  • Supervise and coach a team of three full-time staff and at least one external consultant, focusing on development, growth, accountability, and collaboration.
  • Manage a suite of external vendor relationships for the ongoing systems upgrade.
  • Oversee an annual development plan encompassing individual and major gifts, institutional fundraising, planned and workplace giving, events, sponsored donor-advised funds, and endowment-building.
  • Lead the transition of team systems and processes, including new technology, to establish best practices for donor engagement, solicitation, stewardship, record-keeping, and gift management.
  • Partner with the Executive Director to identify, engage, and steward individual and institutional donors, holding a portfolio of key relationships.
  • Build and maintain close working relationships with the philanthropic community and community partners.
  • Lead staff, board members, and volunteer planning committees in planning and executing fundraising events and donor engagement opportunities.
  • Staff the Fund Development Committee for the board of directors.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of a comprehensive messaging strategy across multiple platforms (impact reports, appeals, acknowledgements, grant proposals, newsletters).
  • Identify opportunities for organizational visibility and storytelling aligned with the mission and values.
  • Build Bread & Roses’ public profile as a thought leader on local movements for change and social change philanthropy.
  • Collaborate with other Senior Council members to set and manage organizational priorities and workflows.
  • Contribute to the development of accessible, flexible, and supportive organizational processes and policies.
  • Work with the Executive Director to create the organization’s overall development strategy and donor stewardship plan, including goals, outcomes, and a team work plan.
  • Develop an effective working partnership and communication structure with the Executive Director for shared planning, relationship management, and communication.
