About The Position

The Senior Director, Global Strategic Marketing is the enterprise leader responsible for shaping where Terumo BCT competes, how we win, and how our portfolio evolves across customer segments (Global Blood Solutions, Global Therapeutic Innovations, Software & Services). This role drives the long‑term strategic marketing agenda by assessing market dynamics, identifying growth opportunities, and translating unmet needs into prioritized enterprise‑level strategies that unlock future growth. This leader brings deep knowledge of Terumo BCT’s business segments, exceptional problem‑solving skills, and a highly creative, future‑focused mindset. The Senior Director serves as a connector of people, products, and services by inspiring new concepts, business models, and possibilities for the organization. The Senior Director leads the cross-functional enterprise prioritization of portfolio opportunities and programs across organic and inorganic pathways, ensuring the organization is positioned for sustained market leadership. Success in this role means the enterprise has clarity on where to play, how to win, and what to prioritize, with strong alignment across regions, functions, and platforms.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Minimum 15 years of progressive leadership experience in medical device or pharmaceutical industries.
  • Deep knowledge of Terumo BCT’s business segments and customer ecosystems, preferred
  • Demonstrated experience leading enterprise‑level strategic marketing, portfolio strategy, or platform strategy.
  • Proven ability to drive innovation, concept development, and new business model creation.
  • Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills; advanced capability in business case development and financial modeling.
  • Exceptional problem‑solving, negotiation, and creative thinking skills — with curiosity and out‑of‑the‑box ideation.
  • Experience influencing across highly matrixed global organizations.
  • An equivalent competency level acquired through a variation of these qualifications may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development of enterprise strategies globally for each customer segment, defining where to play, how to win, and the long-term strategic direction.
  • Assess market dynamics, customer needs, competitive shifts, technology trends, and market attractiveness to identify implications for future growth.
  • Define the long-term portfolio strategy, informing platform and technology roadmaps across a 5–10-year horizon leveraging annual portfolio review.
  • Partner with Commercialization and regional teams to ensure Voice of Customer and market realities are reflected in enterprise strategy.
  • Translate strategy into clear portfolio choices and priorities that guide future investment and innovation.
  • Identify and shape organic and inorganic growth opportunities addressing unmet customer needs and strategic portfolio gaps.
  • Lead the New Opportunity Assessment process, bringing together cross-functional Project Opportunity Teams to evaluate and formalize opportunities.
  • Develop Project Charters (including business cases and light Target Product Profile) defining the opportunity, customer need, strategic rationale, value potential and scientific, regulatory and commercial risks.
  • Partner with R&D and Business Development to evaluate the optimal pathway to capture opportunities, including internal development, external innovation, and inorganic approaches (Build vs Borrow vs Buy).
  • Identify and establish strategic external partnerships that expand enterprise capabilities or accelerate growth, transitioning ongoing partnership management to PLM once established.
  • Lead the cross-functional Enterprise Prioritization process, ensuring new and existing opportunities are evaluated consistently against enterprise strategy.
  • Integrate market attractiveness, customer impact, strategic fit, financial value, and cross-functional inputs on effort, resources, investment, timeline, feasibility, and risk to inform prioritization.
  • Balance near-term opportunities with longer-term portfolio needs and enterprise resource constraints across a 3–5-year investment horizon.
  • Develop clear prioritization recommendations and trade-offs for senior leadership decision-making.
  • Lead opportunities through Investment Committee endorsement and SPC approval, transferring program leadership to PLM following approval.
  • Build, coach, and mentor a high-performing team of global Strategic Marketing leaders, creating clarity of purpose, accountability, and enterprise alignment.
  • Strengthen strategic marketing capability through targeted development, succession planning, shared frameworks, and exposure to enterprise-level initiatives.
  • Foster a culture of curiosity, creativity, ambition, pragmatism, and disciplined strategic thinking, encouraging teams to challenge conventional approaches and identify new possibilities.
  • Elevate strategic marketing capability across the broader Commercial organization through common frameworks, market insights, and strategic thinking tools.
  • Build enterprise understanding of market dynamics, unmet needs, portfolio choices, and prioritization rationale, creating alignment around the “why” behind strategic decisions.
