About The Position

WIRED is seeking an experienced editor to lead its business coverage. This senior management position, reporting to WIRED’s executive editor, will oversee 10+ reporters and editors across US and UK teams. The role involves developing and iterating on editorial strategies, creating coverage plans for tech companies, personalities, and events, and managing a budget and freelance roster. Collaboration with senior editors, audience development, and the digital video team is crucial for maximizing reach and impact across platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram Reels. Success requires extensive knowledge of the tech industry, a history of leading teams that break news, and an informed view on big platforms, AI, and the future of work. The ideal candidate will be a strategic, empathetic, and collaborative leader, adept at motivating teams and working effectively across borders and functions within Conde Nast. The ultimate responsibility is the success of WIRED’s Business section, measured by audience size and engagement.

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of experience as an editor in a fast-paced, digital, and news-driven environment.
  • At least 5 years managing others.
  • A past portfolio reflecting significant experience covering the tech industry, with a consistent record of breaking news and extensive sourcing.
  • Experience overseeing multi-platform content from brainstorm to execution.
  • Ability to balance daily deadlines with longer-lead projects and delegate appropriately.
  • Experience and passion for delivering big, ambitious coverage, particularly around Big Tech, AI, and core focus areas.
  • Skilled at helping editors conceptualize stories and get the best out of writers.
  • Adept at helping writers achieve their best reporting and writing.
  • Ability to structure a story for maximum impact, reader understanding, and engagement.
  • Highly collaborative with excellent communication skills.
  • Adept at working with a diverse team of fact checkers, copy editors, designers, photo editors, digital producers, social media producers, and story editors.
  • Excellent time management and prioritization skills.
  • Candidates must be based out of a WIRED office in San Francisco or New York.

Responsibilities

  • Conceive of, pitch, and develop content strategy and planning for WIRED’s Business section.
  • Work with senior leadership to define goals and priorities for respective areas, ensuring content plans align with broader brand goals.
  • Proactively seek out interesting, diverse voices for differentiated business and industry coverage.
  • Partner with audience development to review audience engagement KPIs and improve content strategy.
  • Manage all projects from concept to execution, including assigning, tracking, and editing stories, budgeting, collaborating with art/photo teams, handling fact-checking and copy queries, overseeing production, and partnering with social/video teams.
  • Meet individual and/or section KPIs (productivity, UPVs, engagement, time spent, etc.).
  • Identify and collaborate with global markets on relevant stories or packages.
  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of editors and reporters across the US and UK, including hiring, talent development, performance management, implementing clear processes, delegating work, and fostering an inclusive team environment.
  • Contribute to brand extensions, social platforms, and additional projects.
  • Represent the brand publicly as needed (social media, press, panels, speaking engagements).
  • Additional projects/stories as assigned.
