About The Position

The Senior Director, Accounting Operations serves as the Controller’s operational deputy, driving operational accounting excellence and process efficiencies that elevate the finance organization’s impact and better achieve strategic company goals across the entire accounting spectrum. This role is accountable for the accuracy, efficiency, and internal control environment across Cost Accounting, Corporate Accounting & GL, Accounts Payable, and Payroll. This is a high-trust leadership role for someone who combines deep technical accounting knowledge with strong operational instincts and the ability to develop talent. This role requires someone who leads with data - using financial and operational metrics to drive decisions and communicate clearly with senior leadership, and who builds trust through collaboration rather than control. The successful candidate will be a proven builder who can drive process improvement, partner cross-functionally, and serve as a stabilizing force during a period of organizational evolution.

Requirements

  • 12+ years of progressive accounting experience, including direct responsibility for cost accounting in a manufacturing or life science environment.
  • 5+ years managing multi-functional accounting teams.
  • Deep knowledge of US GAAP across cost accounting, GL, and payroll disciplines.
  • Demonstrated experience driving close process improvements and building scalable accounting operations.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to translate accounting concepts for non-finance stakeholders.
  • Proven track record of developing accounting talent and building team accountability.

Nice To Haves

  • CPA license.
  • Experience in a public company environment with a Big 4 or large regional firm background.
  • Familiarity with Oracle, or equivalent ERP in a manufacturing context.
  • Exposure to AI-enabled finance tools and process automation.

Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end accounting operations including month-end and quarter-end close, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and auditability across all sub-functions.
  • Serve as day-to-day escalation point for accounting operations issues, proactively surfacing risks and driving resolution.
  • Partner with the Internal Control team to build and maintain a strong internal control environment, and lead the remediation of any identified control deficiencies.
  • Leverage financial data and metrics to identify trends, risks, and improvement opportunities, translating complex accounting information into clear, actionable insights for executive leadership.
  • Partner with FP&A and business partners to ensure financial data integrity and support forecast and budget cycles.
  • Oversee standard costing, manufacturing variance analysis, inventory valuation, and cost of goods sold reporting.
  • Drive process mapping and documentation of cost accounting procedures to support operational continuity.
  • Partner with operations and supply chain to ensure cost data accurately reflects manufacturing and production activity.
  • Lead integration of cost accounting insights into management reporting and business reviews.
  • Oversee GL integrity, chart of accounts governance, and intercompany accounting.
  • Ensure month-end close activities are completed on schedule with appropriate review and reconciliation sign-off.
  • Apply strong analytical judgement to complex accounting transactions, ensuring not just correct treatment but clear explanation of financial impact to non-accounting stakeholders.
  • Manage AP functions with a focus on automation, vendor relationships, and working capital efficiency.
  • Identify and implement systems-driven improvements to reduce manual effort and error rates.
  • Ensure compliance with payment terms, procurement policy, and cash management practices.
  • Oversee payroll operations for a multi-state workforce, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely processing.
  • Evaluate ongoing payroll delivery model (in-house vs. PEO/outsourced) and recommend cost-effective solutions.
  • Partner with HR and Legal on compensation changes, equity events, and regulatory compliance.
  • Lead with collaborative, “we over me” mindset, modeling cross-functional partnership and holding the team accountable to the same standard.
  • Mentor, develop, and retain a team of accounting professionals across Cost Accounting, Corporate Accounting, AP, and Payroll.
  • Set clear performance expectations aligned with 10X Genomics’ values and build accountability structures that enable team members to grow.
  • Drive adoption of AI-enabled tools and workflow automation to increase team capacity and quality.
  • Partner with the Controller on headcount planning, role design, and succession planning.
  • Represent the accounting function credibly in cross-functional leadership and partnership settings, communicating complex financial matters in a way that builds confidence and trust with leaders within the finance organization as well as outside the finance organization.
