Commonwealth Fusion Systems is seeking a Senior Diagnostics Mechanical Engineer to support the SPARC tokamak diagnostic team. SPARC is designed to achieve net fusion energy, with diagnostic subsystems providing plasma-control inputs and scientific data for the development of ARC. The diagnostics span approximately 40 subsystems, including magnetics, interferometry, neutral pressure, spectroscopy, imaging, bolometry, neutron diagnostics, Thomson scattering, electron cyclotron emission, reflectometry, Langmuir probes, and structural temperature and strain sensing. The engineer will help complete the mechanical design and integration of diagnostic systems as they proceed through design closeout, analysis, procurement, testing, and installation. Current work includes finalizing designs and beginning assembly of front-end, in-vacuum measurement devices, addressing engineering challenges in their build and test, and designing structural components for ex-vessel data transmission to diagnostic laboratories. The role is part of an integrated team of diagnostic engineers and fusion scientists working toward demonstrating net energy from a tokamak. The posting welcomes senior and early-career engineers as well as cross-industry career changers. This full-time position is onsite and offers a salary range of $134,000–$205,000 per year, plus equity and benefits. Actual compensation depends on level, location, qualifications, and experience. Employment offers are contingent on compliance with applicable U.S. export control laws.
