Senior DevOps Engineer

PathAI•Boston, MA
•$127,500 - $195,500•Hybrid

About The Position

PathAI is hiring its first dedicated Developer Operations Engineer to own release automation, CI/CD, build and deployment infrastructure, and developer environments across its products. These include AISight, a digital pathology platform deployed in cloud and on-premises environments, and software supporting biopharma clinical trial services. The role owns its backlog and OKRs, sets technical direction for software building, testing, and release practices, and partners with product and integration engineering teams. Because the clinical software is regulated as a medical device, the role designs automation that improves release speed and safety while meeting quality system requirements. This senior role has a path to growing into a team and is intended to increase engineering capacity and make frequent, low-risk releases routine. The position owns the end-to-end release process for cloud and on-premises deployments, standardizes release and infrastructure practices across product lines, and sets long-term direction for how PathAI services are built, deployed, and operated. It also works with quality and regulatory teams on compliant release and rollback processes, develops performance metrics for regulatory monitoring, and automates required release documentation. The position is remote in the US or hybrid in Boston, MA, with two days per week in the office. Relocation benefits are not available. The expected salary range for the Boston, MA primary location is $127,500–$195,500; actual pay depends on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience in DevOps, platform, build/release, or site reliability engineering.
  • Deep expertise designing and maintaining CI/CD systems, such as GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, ArgoCD, or Kargo.
  • Strong experience with containers and orchestration, such as Docker and Kubernetes, and infrastructure as code, such as Terraform or similar.
  • Hands-on experience with a major cloud provider, preferably AWS, and deploying and supporting software in customer-hosted, on-premises environments.
  • Proficiency in at least one scripting or programming language, such as Python or Go.
  • Experience implementing zero-downtime deployment strategies such as blue-green or canary releases.
  • Familiarity with monitoring and observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, or Datadog.
  • Ability to quickly learn unfamiliar codebases and reason through operational problems in systems not written by the candidate.
  • Ability to self-direct, define a roadmap, prioritize a backlog, and communicate progress to engineering leadership.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a regulated environment, such as FDA, IVDR, ISO 13485, or IEC 62304.
  • Experience consolidating repositories into a monorepo or standardizing build tooling across many services.
  • Background in healthcare, life sciences, or medical imaging, especially deploying into hospital IT environments with restricted or air-gapped networks.

Responsibilities

  • Own the end-to-end release process for cloud and on-premises deployments, automating manual steps such as versioning, localization, and zero-downtime blue-green cutovers.
  • Partner with quality and regulatory teams to design compliant release and rollback processes that enable changes to be shipped and reverted quickly and safely.
  • Design and maintain fast, reliable CI/CD pipelines, sensible container image build strategies, and consistent configuration across repositories; use DORA metrics to measure and improve delivery performance.
  • Bring product lines onto a common release and infrastructure model, including zero-downtime deployments, repository consolidation, and faster pipeline feedback for developers.
  • Standardize deployment tooling, monitoring, and observability across cloud, on-premises, production, and test environments, including packaging and upgrade paths for customer-hosted installations.
  • Build product performance metrics reported as part of ongoing regulatory monitoring.
  • Automate release documentation required by the quality system for a regulated medical device company.
  • Identify and address root causes of recurring operational issues, improving feedback loops between support and engineering.
  • Set long-term direction for how PathAI services are built, deployed, and operated.
  • Own a backlog and OKRs, define technical direction, and partner with product and integration engineering teams.
