About The Position

Corning Incorporated is seeking a Senior Development Scientist to join its Glass Melting team at the Sullivan Park R&D center in Corning, New York. The role focuses on developing glass-melting processes for new compositions that are consistent, controlled, and ready for pilot or manufacturing scale. It may suit candidates with hands-on glass melting or other high-temperature materials experience who have helped move a process from laboratory work toward scale-up. The position is onsite, Monday through Friday, for a 40-hour week, with flexibility as needed and up to 25% travel to Corning locations. Relocation assistance is available. The position supports immigration sponsorship.

Requirements

  • PhD in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Geology, or a related field with at least 5 years of relevant R&D experience, or a master's degree with at least 10 years of relevant R&D experience.
  • Hands-on experience melting or processing materials above 1000°C, such as glass, ceramics, or metals.
  • Experience taking a process from concept through scale-up, trials, or transfer to pilot or manufacturing.
  • Working knowledge of heat and mass transfer, fluid mechanics, reaction kinetics, and thermodynamics, and how they connect material properties with process and product performance.
  • Ability to interpret process-modeling outputs to guide experiments; model building is not required.
  • Clear communication skills and ability to work independently across interdisciplinary teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Direct glass melting experience, including equipment and quality measurements.
  • Industry development, pilot-line, or manufacturing experience.
  • Experience partnering with equipment designers to specify or build process equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Design, conduct, and analyze melting and process experiments, and determine next steps.
  • Develop repeatable processes from laboratory-scale melts that produce consistent samples.
  • Define manufacturing platform requirements, including what must be measured and controlled.
  • Transfer processes to pilot lines or manufacturing and ensure technical and operational readiness.
  • Develop analytical tools and techniques to make processes robust and optimized.
  • Partner with research, modeling, characterization, and equipment design experts, using modeling outputs to guide experiments.
  • Communicate findings and risks to stakeholders while managing multiple programs.
