About The Position

The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) is seeking a Senior Design Manager for A/E Services to oversee the design aspects of seismic work, critical repairs, and retrofits on its numerous aging campuses. This role involves managing and coordinating the District's design process to ensure all plans adhere to program, budget, environmental regulations, and legal requirements. The Senior Design Manager will lead a team of design professionals through the design review process, manage multiple projects concurrently, and collaborate with architects, consultants, and District staff to ensure timely completion. Key responsibilities include selecting appropriate architecture firms, providing clear direction on project goals and standards, conducting design reviews to ensure compliance with LAUSD standards, and reviewing design changes to maintain budget adherence. The position also requires reporting on the status of planning and design efforts and identifying areas requiring decisions.

Requirements

• 14 years of full-time paid professional experience managing facilities design, or planning and coordinating capital projects that included overall design, contract administration, cost estimating, and scheduling.
• 4 of those years must be on the design, planning, and construction of schools or similar public agencies.
• A bachelor's degree in architecture or engineering.
• Strong writing and speaking skills.
• Experience leading other design professionals, not just individual projects.

Nice To Haves

• A master's degree in architecture or engineering.
• A current California Certificate of Registration as an Architect, or a Professional Engineer license.
• Experience with seismic retrofit and structural repair work on occupied buildings.
• Experience with DSA (the state office that approves public school construction).

Responsibilities

• Manage seismic, critical repair, and retrofit projects, several at once.
• Lead a team of design professionals and oversee the design review process.
• Manage the District's design process for A&E Services from initial drawings to final buildable plans.
• Select architecture firms best suited for each project based on their capabilities.
• Provide clear direction to architects regarding goals, standards, sites, schedules, and budgets.
• Conduct design reviews to ensure built projects meet LAUSD standards and provide value for money.
• Review design changes to ensure projects stay within budget.
• Report on the status of planning and design, including findings and recommendations.

• Salary range: $185,000 to $203,000 per year, based on experience.
