About The Position

The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) is responsible for maintaining and ensuring the safety of its numerous aging campuses. This involves critical repairs, seismic retrofits, and general upkeep of buildings occupied by students. The Senior Design Manager for A/E Services will lead the design aspects of these projects and manage the team responsible for them. This role involves overseeing the District's design process to ensure all plans adhere to program requirements, budget constraints, environmental regulations, and legal standards. The manager will guide a team of design professionals through the design review process, handle multiple projects concurrently, and collaborate with architects, consultants, and District staff to ensure timely project completion. Key responsibilities include selecting appropriate architecture firms, providing clear direction on project goals, standards, site utilization, schedules, and budgets, conducting design reviews to ensure compliance with LAUSD standards, and approving design changes to maintain budget adherence. The role also requires reporting on the status of planning and design efforts and identifying areas requiring decisions.

Requirements

  • 14 years of full-time paid professional experience managing facilities design, or planning and coordinating capital projects that included overall design, contract administration, cost estimating, and scheduling.
  • 4 years of experience in the design, planning, and construction of schools or similar public agencies.
  • A bachelor's degree in architecture or engineering.
  • Strong writing and speaking skills.
  • Experience leading other design professionals.

Nice To Haves

  • A master's degree in architecture or engineering.
  • A current California Certificate of Registration as an Architect, or a Professional Engineer license.
  • Seismic retrofit and structural repair work on occupied buildings.
  • Experience with DSA (the state office that approves public school construction).

Responsibilities

  • Manage seismic, critical repair, and retrofit projects, handling several simultaneously.
  • Lead a team of design professionals and oversee the design review process.
  • Oversee the District's design process for A&E Services from initial concept to buildable plans.
  • Select architecture firms best suited for each project based on their delivery capabilities.
  • Provide clear direction to architects regarding goals, standards, sites, schedules, and budgets.
  • Conduct design reviews to ensure compliance with LAUSD standards and budget adherence.
  • Review design changes to ensure projects remain within budget.
  • Report on the status of planning and design, including findings and recommendations.
