About The Position

The Senior Design Engineer is a primary technical resource for developing industrial control system designs, project estimates, and customer proposals for SJE Revere. The role evaluates customer technical requirements, prepares preliminary control system designs, reviews applicable specifications, and coordinates with Engineering, Operations, Sales, customers, and vendors to produce technically sound and commercially competitive proposals. It requires working knowledge of industrial control systems, electrical design practices, panel fabrication, and automation technologies, as well as effective coordination across teams to support the transition of awarded projects from proposal development into execution. The Senior Design Engineer applies company design and estimating standards and helps improve estimating tools, pricing databases, proposal templates, and design practices. The role ensures compliance with applicable industry codes, customer specifications, and Revere procedures; provides technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced estimators and designers; and helps resolve technical questions during proposal development. The candidate will work at the Birmingham, Alabama, or Charlotte, North Carolina, office location and must live within commuting distance of one of the company’s four listed offices: Birmingham, Charlotte, Texarkana, Texas, or Lakeland, Florida.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must live within commuting distance of one of the listed office locations: Birmingham, Alabama; Charlotte, North Carolina; Texarkana, Texas; or Lakeland, Florida.

Responsibilities

  • Develop preliminary control panel layouts and bills of materials, control systems, electrical distribution, and equipment designs for project estimating and proposal development.
  • Review client technical specifications for system components, including electrical, controls, and network components.
  • Create engineering submittals, designs, vendor requests for quotation, and documentation for internal approvals and project execution as required.
  • Prepare job estimates, change-order estimates, and quotations consistent with Revere’s profit-margin standards.
  • Apply company design standards, component standards, estimation procedures, and workflows; provide feedback for improvement.
  • Maintain working knowledge of UL, NEC, and NFPA requirements applicable to industrial control projects.
  • Provide input and guidance for opportunity evaluation, estimating, and component lead-time and pricing evaluations.
  • Become proficient with Revere’s Master Pricing Database structure and maintain knowledge of products and solutions, including specification compliance, lead time, pricing, and availability.
  • Provide clear project and bid-package information to proposal team members and vendors to obtain input for complete proposals.
  • Coordinate with Sales and internal consulting engineers or technical leads to obtain information and clarifications.
  • Support customer bid and proposal activities, including pre-bid meetings, conference calls, and bid-clarification meetings, with the assigned Business Development Manager or engineering resources.
  • Meet bid-submission deadlines and lead technical or commercial bid-compliance meetings with the Estimation and Sales Group when necessary.
  • Prepare successful proposals for transition from Sales to Operations.
  • Work with the Commercial Team and participate in project kickoff meetings to align project team members and establish project schedules.
  • Identify and recommend innovative methods and value-engineering options to better serve customers.
  • Gather project-performance feedback from Operations and record it to inform future bids.
  • Initiate or coordinate customer follow-up on outstanding quotations as needed to support the Business Development Manager or Sales Group.
  • Maintain knowledge of Revere’s services and communicate them to existing and potential customers.
  • Work autonomously to achieve departmental goals and objectives.
  • Mentor less experienced Design Engineers and Estimators or Business Development Managers in industry standards, best practices, and competitive considerations.
  • Promote a positive, supportive, collaborative work environment and high team morale.

  • Recommend technically appropriate, commercially responsible solutions in customers’ long-term interests, maintaining professional integrity and ethical business practices.
  • Provide technical guidance for preliminary power-distribution design, including low- and medium-voltage systems, switchgear, motor control centers, E-House configurations, grounding, circuit and current protection, and electrical equipment applications.
