About The Position

Peregrine Advisors is a data and technology innovation hub and a Benefit Corporation working at the center of the federal government's mission. In this role, you will own the database layer of a federal agency's enterprise data platform, including its physical design, data models, database-architecture decisions, and performance tuning across Amazon Aurora, DynamoDB, and Apache Iceberg tables on Amazon S3. The work is described as real, hard, and important, serving as a starting point for career growth within the firm. You will build a database layer that performs at scale, with tuned queries, logical and physical data models, schema migrations, S3 load patterns, stored procedures, and Apache Ranger access controls. You will also contribute to the firm's growth through new capabilities, tools, and lines of business.

Requirements

  • Sole United States citizenship and the ability to obtain a Public Trust determination.
  • Hybrid role based in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, requiring regular commuting into DC.
  • At least seven years of database development and administration experience.
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Experience with Amazon Aurora (PostgreSQL-compatible), DynamoDB, and Apache Iceberg tables on S3.
  • Experience with physical design at scale, including partitioning, indexing, and storage layout.
  • Experience with query and EXPLAIN-plan tuning on large datasets.
  • Experience with logical and physical data modeling.
  • Experience with database-architecture design within an established enterprise data platform.
  • Experience with PL/pgSQL stored procedures and S3 load patterns into relational and Iceberg stores.
  • Basic proficiency in writing, PowerPoint, and Excel.

Nice To Haves

  • Schema migration tooling, including Amazon Web Services (AWS) Schema Conversion Tool.
  • Access controls using Apache Ranger.
  • Neptune or Neo4j experience.
  • Federal information technology or high-volume transaction experience.
  • Familiarity with artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted developer tooling.

Responsibilities

  • Own the database layer of a federal agency's enterprise data platform.
  • Design the physical design, data models, and database-architecture decisions.
  • Ensure performance of the database layer at scale.
  • Shape, structure, and tune the database layer across Amazon Aurora, DynamoDB, and Apache Iceberg tables on Amazon S3.
  • Implement physical design covering partitioning, indexing, and storage layout for large datasets.
  • Tune queries and execution plans on large datasets.
  • Develop logical and physical data models that support the wider platform architecture.
  • Manage schema migrations, S3 load patterns into relational and Iceberg stores, stored procedures, and Apache Ranger access controls.
  • Contribute to the firm's growth through new capabilities, tools, and lines of business.
