Sr. Data Scientist

RUE GILT GROUPE•Boston, MA
•$145,000 - $150,000•Hybrid

About The Position

Rue Gilt Groupe is hiring a Senior Data Scientist to build and ship personalization systems for Rue La La, Gilt, and ShopSimon. The role owns products end to end, from problem framing and success metrics through feature engineering, model training, real-time serving, and monitoring. The work supports product discovery for more than 50 million members in a flash-sale e-commerce environment where inventory is limited and short-lived, new products and boutiques launch daily, and cold-start recommendations are common. The Senior Data Scientist will develop ranking and recommendation systems, including boutique sorting, similar-style recommendations, complete-the-look features, and real-time reranking. The role also explores contextual bandits and adaptive strategies, builds production training and inference pipelines, runs offline evaluations and online A/B tests, and applies LLMs and embeddings where they improve recommendations. The position works closely with Product, Engineering, Marketing, and Merchandising, and presents findings to leadership. The AI & Data Science team is described as a small, senior team that owns its products, science, and production systems, with team members carrying work from idea through launch. The role is hybrid in New York or Boston, with two office days required. The listed salary range is $145,000–$150,000.

  • Experience with embeddings, two-tower or sequence models, and vector search.

  • Experience with production LLMs for inference, RAG, evaluation, or agent tool calling.
  • E-commerce, retail, or fashion experience.
  • Ability to derive insights from complex data through analysis and modeling.
  • Must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis; the position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Responsibilities

  • Build ranking and recommendation models that power product discovery across boutiques, product pages, and the AI shopping assistant.

  • Explore contextual bandits and adaptive strategies that adjust the shopping experience to individual member preferences.
  • Shape product roadmaps and success metrics with Product partners.
  • Build production training and inference pipelines for batch and real-time use, including appropriate monitoring and reliability.
  • Design offline evaluations and online A/B tests, and translate results into decisions with Product and Merchandising.
  • Use LLMs and embeddings where they improve recommendations, and expose models as tools the shopping assistant can call.
  • Partner with Engineering, Product, Marketing, and Merchandising teams.
  • Present work to leadership.
