About The Position

The Industry Solutions Engineering (ISE) team at Microsoft is a global engineering organization that collaborates directly with customers to leverage the latest technologies, including AI and cloud-based solutions, to address complex challenges. The team works closely with customers' engineers, Microsoft product teams, partners, and open-source communities to jointly develop code for cloud-based solutions, accelerating their organizations. This role is for a Senior Data Scientist within the ISE team, focusing on driving high-impact engineering projects with customers and partners by transforming their missions using AI and other cloud-based solutions and services. Data scientists on this cross-functional team (which includes software engineers, technical program managers, and designers) possess expertise in data management and developing statistical techniques to analyze data and identify patterns. The position involves working with a variety of technologies, solving exciting business problems, contributing to open source, and collaborating with Microsoft product teams, all while embodying Microsoft's mission to empower every person and organization to achieve more.

Requirements

  • Doctorate in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 1+ year(s) data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results) OR Master's Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 3+ years data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results) OR Bachelor's Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 5+ years data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results) OR equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years customer-facing, project-delivery experience, professional services, and/or consulting experience.
  • Currently have, or have the ability to obtain Secret (Level II) screening from a duly authorized department or agency of the Government of Canada. This process includes but is not limited to verification of identity, background, education, professional credentials, personal and professional references, credit check and criminal background check. Secret security clearance screening may also require a security questionnaire and security interview, and a Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) security assessment. To obtain the requisite clearance within required timelines, applicants must have ten (10) years of continuous Canadian residency, and must not have lived or worked outside of Canada for more than six (6) months during that time, unless Microsoft is satisfied that the requisite clearance can nevertheless be obtained within required timelines.
  • Need to be able to travel into the US to work with US customers.

Responsibilities

  • Acquire the data necessary for your project plan and develop usable data sets for modeling.
  • Update internal best practices for data collection and preparation, and contribute to data integrity conversations with customers.
  • Evaluate your team’s models and recommend improvements as necessary.
  • Drive best practices for models, and develop operational models that run at scale.
  • Conduct thorough reviews of data analysis and modeling techniques, and identify and invent new evaluation methods.
  • Research and maintain a deep knowledge of the industry, including trends and technologies, so that you can identify strategy opportunities and contribute to thought leadership best practices.
  • Write extensible code that spans multiple features, and develop expertise in proper debugging techniques.
  • Define business, customer, and solution strategy goals, and partner with other teams to identify and explore new opportunities.
  • Apply a customer-oriented focus to understand their needs, and help drive realistic customer expectations.
