Senior Data Engineer

Mayo Clinic•Rochester, MN

About The Position

This Analytics Engineering role joins Mayo Clinic’s team as a Senior Data Engineer focused on building its IAM Data Fabric—a trusted source of identity data that supports the Identity and Access Management system. The Fabric brings together identity, account, entitlement, access, ownership, and risk data from across the enterprise to help the organization understand who has access to what, how access was granted, and where risk is concentrated. Access certifications, audit evidence, lifecycle automation, and executive reporting depend on this data foundation. The primary focus is the Fabric’s reporting and analytics layer: designing BigQuery data products and Power BI semantic models that provide actionable insight to IAM leadership, application owners, Information Security, and Audit. The engineer partners with teams across the Identity Management Program to understand reporting needs, model data, and establish dependable reporting standards. Over time, the role will expand to include ingestion pipelines and foundational platform components, so curiosity about data flows and willingness to learn ETL and platform engineering are important. The role develops and deploys data pipelines, integrations, and transformations for analytics and machine learning applications within an assigned product team. It requires maintaining an understanding of organizational solutions, coding languages, and tools, and applying independent judgment. The engineer may provide consultative services to departments, divisions, and leadership committees. They partner with product owners and Analytics and Machine Learning delivery teams to identify and retrieve data, conduct exploratory analysis, build pipelines and transform data, visualize trends, build and validate analytical models, and turn qualitative and quantitative assessments into actionable insights. The position works hands-on with Google Cloud, BigQuery, Dataform or dbt, Power BI, Cosmos DB, and AI coding assistants such as Claude and Codex on a small, senior team. This vacancy is not eligible for sponsorship, and Mayo Clinic will not sponsor or transfer visas for this position. Mayo Clinic does not participate in the F-1 STEM OPT extension program.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant analytical or quantitative field and at least five years of professional or research experience in data visualization, data engineering, or analytical modeling techniques; alternatively, an associate’s degree in a relevant field and at least seven years of such experience. In-depth business or practice knowledge may also be considered.
  • At least five years of hands-on experience in analytics engineering, data engineering, or BI development.
  • Expert-level SQL, including complex joins, window functions, common table expressions, and performance tuning on large analytical datasets.
  • Proficiency in Python for data transformation and automation.
  • At least two years of production experience with Google BigQuery, including partitioning, clustering, cost or slot optimization, scheduled queries, and authorized views.
  • Hands-on experience building and maintaining transformation pipelines with Dataform or dbt, including modular SQL models, dependency management, testing, documentation, and scheduled runs.
  • Experience using Git-based source control and CI/CD for data assets.
  • Working knowledge of GCP services including IAM, Cloud Storage, Dataflow, Pub/Sub, and Managed Airflow.
  • Experience building and maintaining Power BI reports and semantic models, including DAX, row-level security, and dataset refresh and gateway management.
  • Experience with governed, documented metric definitions that serve as a single source of truth for key KPIs.
  • Experience applying dimensional modeling, data warehousing concepts, and data quality practices.
  • Ability to turn ambiguous analytic and reporting requests into well-defined data products.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, building, and installing data systems and applying them within a data and analytics technology framework.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with a metrics or semantic layer tool such as Looker/LookML, dbt Semantic Layer/MetricFlow, or Dataform-based metric definitions, including Looker Studio alongside Power BI.
  • Exposure to identity, security, or compliance datasets and governance requirements such as PHI/PII handling, HIPAA, and least-privilege access, or experience in healthcare or another regulated industry.
  • Experience with NoSQL/document databases, particularly Azure Cosmos DB, including partition key design, RU consumption, and change feed.
  • Experience with data observability and testing frameworks such as Great Expectations or Monte Carlo beyond native Dataform/dbt tests.
  • Hands-on experience with agentic AI workflows, MCP-based tool integrations, or building LLM-assisted data tooling.
  • Familiarity with cross-cloud integration (Azure Data Factory, Synapse, or Microsoft Fabric) and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform) for GCP and Azure.
  • Familiarity with Agile/SAFe delivery and Azure DevOps or Jira.
  • Certifications are strongly encouraged: dbt Analytics Engineering Certification; Google Cloud Professional Data Engineer; Microsoft Certified: Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate (DP-600); or Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate (PL-300).

  • Develop and deploy data pipelines, integrations, and transformations supporting analytics and machine learning applications.
  • Partner with product owners and Analytics and Machine Learning delivery teams to identify and retrieve data and conduct exploratory analysis.
  • Transform and visualize data to identify trends, build and validate analytical models, and translate assessments into actionable insights.
  • Over time, expand work into ingestion pipelines and foundational platform components that feed the Fabric.
  • Maintain knowledge of organizational solutions, coding languages, and tools; apply independent judgment and potentially provide consultative services to departments, divisions, and leadership committees.
  • Lead technical design reviews or establish engineering and reporting standards for a team.
